Description . I'm willing to agree that ani-manga is indeed a form of art. But anatomically incorrect, traced, unoriginal derivates of such aren't.
There's a difference between following a certain style and doing it right and trying to mimic it without any basic knowledge of what you're doing and failing epically.
And saying 'omg itz manga u dont no what ur talking bout the eyes/hair/heads/bodies r just liek dis!!1' doesn't make your art any less awful.
Stop making shit excuses and learn a thing or two about drawing in general before you come and spam us all with your googly eyed, badly traced, badly coloured, dodge tooled animu fanart. I mean it for your own good.

I agree...
I've drawn 3 fan art pics, and I think the only thing I fail at is Skin Tone...that and Spiky hair...I've been given compliments on my fan art, but I still think I fail at getting the right skin tone, and drawing Guys with spiky hair...I don't trace, but I do use an official screenshot of the character as a reference, I leave it up on my computer screen, and draw using a piece of paper attached to a clipboard, and draw from there...I'll admit I use to trace, but that was like between 6 and 10 years ago...I also don't criticize who draw badly, if I see something I don't like I ignore it, and go on with my life...plain and simple...

It's fairly obvious when someone cries it's their style that they don't care enough to even attempt to improve..

Fairly hypocritical of them if they whine about sucking at drawing too.

I know what you mean.
My comics are WAY distorted, but you can tell I'm doing it on purpose, because there are consistent artistic elements in the characters.

*squee moment* Dude, if you knew the times I've lurked through your gallery. Your style is one of the main reasons I draw like I do now.

That being said, thanks.

I still don't understand why some kids here are thinking they draw good, while they are drawing so bad.

I'm drawing animedrawings too, but more out of fun and not to become one time a "Mangaka". I sometimes try to draw realistic, to study the human anatomy, because I want to learn how to draw a really realistic picture.

Sorry for my english.

Realistic drawings are better and I only admire people and say that they are really good, when they can draw normal human anatomy.

Sorry for my bad explaining in english, I hope you understood me.

hmmm, i see your point to those who trace and stuff, i dislike people like that who don't see behind the required skills, and dont practice anything else. This reminds me of How to draw manga books and how people think they are godly.....[its annoying]
The part i disagree on is that professional artists learn human anatomy first and then simplify it for anime. If you ask any very good freelance artist how to get better nobody will ever tell you to study anime.

I am not sure: if you are talking about anime newbies then this is true i would agree, but if you talk in general all artists then you prolly just know the newbies, cause this isn't true everywhere.

You agree with me then. What I say was if you want to draw anime, you'll have to know realistic human anatomy to a basic level.

Thanks for the comment.

Man, I may be drunk, but I read this sooo wrong at first.

You're right though, I have used the "It's manga; it's meant to be like that!" excuse in my past. Hopefully my style has evolved... but still. This is a bold statement to make. Maybe even one of those where people say "What exactly makes YOU the authority on this?!?" but still... I think it doesn't matter what a critics level is in comparison with the critiqued. It's likes saying a passenger in a car can't recognise a driver is doing it wrong even when they are crashing just because they don't have a license...

What I mean is: Right on. This is right on...

I draw Lion King fanart, and I have to admit my old ones were bad because of a lack of drawing experience. I hope my art isn't considered bad now! Especially considering the fact that I learned to draw from a Disney Magic Artist drawing book.

This is EPIC :3
I saw this stamp and just had to collect it.
Honestly, I'm a self taught artist. And my style is like no ones else. -I'm NOT saying I'm good; I'm okay-
I usually get told, 'Well, Lex, your art isn't anime... so Sarah is better'
So my style isn't good enough. Even if I am better, because its no Anime it suck. I'm tried of teen/children/adults(?) Copying of of higher artist.
Again; epic stamp.

I don't like it when you got these kids that won't take any honest critique from you because they'll jump behind this "It's my style" clause. I'm sure it can go for anime or any other "style" as well.

They close themselves off from any possibility of improvement until they overcome this thought process.

Good understanding of anatomy, perspective, foreshortening, balance, design > style. That is, I think style is the last thing one should develop when approaching art. XD

Nice stamp.

You are pretty good at animal anatomy, which is much harder than human one imo. If you already have some kind of skill in that area, moving on to other techniques won't be so hard on you.

Sure, I say "It's the style", but I finish the sentence, "I suck, and making long necks just makes me feel better for some reason."
So, I know I'm bad. And Crappy-ness is a style . . . but it's crappy.

True.
I understand some people who don't want to be told their bad, but just want to live in their world of fanart. But, they shouldn't exspect to be taken siriously.
If someone says "That's a horrible picture."
They should say. "Oh well, I just like drawing Inuasha/naruto/final fantasy. "
Not "Shut up! You're just jelous of my style!"

And I get original styles in progress. (Example: Evolution of Disney over the decades.) But, you need actual talent and originality for that.

MaRaMa-Artz [2008-12-02 16:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Very true, this reminds me of a friend I used to tell she drew her characters too slim at the waist (I used to make that mistake myself) and she said that was "the style" of something I can't remember now. I told her even if it's "the style" of whatever famous artist I still see it as a mistake and if she made that better then it means she'll be doing better than "that style". Dunno if she followed the advice though...her art still looks just about the same...

And I believe that drawing someone else's style is pretty much copying if it's done exactly the same. There should always be some personal touches unless it's in purpose you want to copy it so it looks like theirs. I usually can't stop myself from adding or changing things in fanart. If I don't it feels....um...fake? Dunno how to explain, but just not mine.

I know what you mean. You have to have at least some bases before you go wandering off into new realms of style and design. If you really do deem yourself as an artist, your achievements should be idiosyncrasy in style and technical 'erfection'.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

deadrabbit13 [2008-11-22 17:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Amen to that.
I'm tired of how people just cling to the anime style to avoid drawing proper anatomy because they think it can hide it. I think in a way that's an insult to anime style, for it can be very beautiful when well executed (granted some artists take a few anatomical liberties).
I wholeheartedly agree!

SwlabrGears In reply to deadrabbit13 [2008-12-09 23:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Manga can be one the most expressive and aesthetically beautiful art styles if drawn well; so why can't people honour their influences by doing them properly?
