Among a joyful crowd hanging around, he appeared in his wheelchair, figure of poverty so hard to see especially at this time of the year. I walked to him. We talked, laughed and while keeping silent for a moment, he took a puff of Marijuana, coughing and saying:'' It relieves the pain." No doubt in my mind about his tragic world of sufferings. Then he proudly pointed to his mask with the middle finger printed on it, saying this was his answer to the street gang harassing and beating him.
After a while, I gave the guy money, wished him well and walked away. Then I heard a loud and warful Merry Christmas. Turning around, with a big smile on my face, I wished him the same.
On the way back home, I sadly wondered which of the two of us was the poorer???
Hope to meet him someday.
