Description
PATREON | INSTAGRAM | TWITTER | FACEBOOK | TUMBLR | ARTSTATION | YOUTUBEHeya guys! This is part one of my face tutorial series; the lips!
In total, the lip tutorial series has three different variations - you can find a sample of what to expect in this term's lip tutorial pack here !
Sorry for the watermark, I do hope it's not too distracting! The tutorials given as a reward via patreon will not have this watermark!
This image is available for a full sized download here, but does not include the other two lip tutorials.
Read below for the steps!
---
For this tutorial I used the photoshop default round brush! Brush opacity is turned on.
Step 1: Just a quick sketch here guys. If you're new to painting lips, grab a reference and do your best! There's no shame in referencing a photograph - especially when you are learning! This will end up being your guideline for painting (or which ever preference you have for coloring!).
Step 2: Block in some color! Start with a basic, flat color. We're not worried about details or defining; we simply want to get a feel for correct shapes and the the proper shade of (in this case) pink!
Step 3: Let's add a bit of form. Here, we're adding very light shadows. Ask yourself, where is the light hitting? Where are the shadows cast? Much like the sketch phase, we're marking a guideline for the rest of the painting. Lips are usually plump and rounded in certain areas - those spots should not be shadowed while some areas (like the inside of the mouth) will be much darker due to very little light hitting them! Instead of using pure black inside the mouth, I decided to opt for a deep blue. This will keep your image from looking muddy.
Step 4: Let's intensify the shadows! Darker shadows will improve your values, and help define shapes and lines! Here, I added lines where the creases formed on the lips, and darkened a bit around the tongue. The teeth now also cast a very light shadow over the tongue, and the curve of the bottom lip shows a small shadow where it curves near the chin.
Step 5: Highlights, baby! Each pair of lips will be different in this regard, but for my lips, I wanted to give them a glossy lipstick look! Remember when I mentioned the plumpness of the lips being a lighter color? Well, we're going to really accentuate that with a light pink (almost white!) color on the lips. Blotch this in the areas between the lip crevices to really add contrast and shape! We're also focusing on the teeth here, adding a bit of structure. In my style, however, I do not add a significant amount of detail to the teeth but if you're going for pure realism, it's important not to forget that step!
Step 6: Our last and final step! This step is all about improving the values. Really bring out the dark shadows, and intensify the highlights! The more you focus on the step, the better the final result. Try to avoid using pure white or pure black. Instead, focus on heavy blues or purples for shadows while using pinks, yellows and oranges for highlights! I like to go for a painterly look, so my strokes are still loose while still defining key points in the image. Finally, smooth out the lines around the edges to blend the lips with the face!

Well, I hope it was helpful! Any feedback is much appreciated, as I intend to include more of these with my patreon rewards.
