Its huge, but kind of worth it.
I got in during the middle of its run, and I remember how long it took me to catch up. But the story had so many more updates to go through to get to the end, so its GINORAGANTIC now and I don't have much advise aside from "take your time. and take breaks."
Perhaps the worst part of catching up while reading it is the sudden changes to other arcs. Who's this "Spades Slick" douchhole and why should I drop everything to try and care about him? Oh...I guess I'll read.
....sigh....(It was pretty good, honestly. Although I had to skip that one and come back later because I had lost patience then.)
(Don't forget to check out their bandcamp for a lot of music albums talented fans made for the story while it was under development. Sadly, there's a lot of albums that are based around characters and events later in the story arc, but you can find any song played in the comic in those albums. Taking a break to listen to the music and see the different art most songs have is kind of part of the homestuck experience)
