Description

These sketches were originally done on 10/31/22! I'm finally heading back into my backlog of unposted art and sharing some Detective stuff. For those that don't know, Mystic Detective is a ttrpg campaign my friends and I are playing, a murder mystery in a fantasy Victorian-England-adjacent setting.

I drew this early on after designing Sapph! I wasn't very good at fashion or at drawing her yet, so... what better way to learn than fun silly clothing studies?
...for those of you that know your Victorian-era fashion, you likely know that these outfits are... not at all from a single fashion period. My excuses? 1) When I first designed Sapph, I was told the setting was "in the Victorian era" so I picked my favorite fashion period to work with- the early 1890s(ish). The DM later amended that to it being more 1860s. Whoops. 2) This is a fantasy setting! Sapph is a fancy little lady who enjoys her fashion and I wanna play dress-up with fashions I enjoy. I ignored the DM's 1860s time frame, and he doesn't know fashion anyway so he'll never notice. :3

My rationalization for the anachronistic fashions? WELL! I've broadly assigned older fashions to more traditional, old-fashioned people, events, or institutions, and more recent fashions to innovators and forward-thinking individuals. Sapph, as an inventor with some rather uncommon views on heresy, generally wears fashions from the 1890s and just barely the turn of the century. The Church, however, is a somewhat traditionalist, very controlling institution, so fashions from the 1860s are in vogue in Church balls and masquerades. I've designed a bunch of random NPCs for Detective, and I've loosely committed to this design philosophy for them.
