Description

Trajan's Kiosk, on Agilkia Island near Aswan, was commissioned by Roman Emperor M. Ulpius Traianus (ruled 98-117 AD), or, as the Egyptians would say, Autokrator Kisrs Neru Trinus Ankh-djet-meri-Aset (Given Life, Beloved of Isis).  It stood on Philae Island as part of the Temple of Philae, but was moved to its current location (along with the entire temple complex) to save it from the flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Originally roofed (perhaps), the structure is now open to the sky. It is one of the latest buildings to be erected in honour of the classical Egyptian gods.

The Romans loved leaving buildings all over the place... soon up, a rather similar-looking structure deep in the desert near Meroe, far beyond the reach of Rome, but not beyond the reach of her architectural styles...
