Description Series: Let's Cook! Cooking Tutorials

Lesson 1: Gyouza - Part 3: Cooking

I think the next recipe should be fried rice - we almost always have mix left over, and it makes frickin' fantastic fried rice.

Until the next lesson!

I do like Gyouza. Especially the part where you dip them in vinegar and add small amount of ginger on top for taste. Well, that's the Chinese style of eating it anyway. And they call it "guo tie" but I guess they're the same?

pretty much any fried japanese food has a root in chinese and/or european culture - you have to figure, japan in the olden times didn't really have much in the way of cooking oils, so most things were boiled/grilled/pickled/dried.

Or raw. As in sushi! XD I love sushi. When I went to Canada with my youth group last summer, I was the only one who ate all my sushi(the leaders made everyone at least try it.)

I actually did.... The funniest part was watching every one else fail at using chopsticks, while I'm picking the tiny pieces of tofu and nori out of my soup with them.

Can you recommend any types of dipping sauce that don't have soy in them? My roommate is horrifically allergic to soy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to Chaos--Child [2009-07-04 18:42:49 +0000 UTC]

ooo, that's a toughy... if she can eat hot stuff, there are some vietnamese (sweet) hot sauces that might work. thing is, in japanese cooking, practically EVERY sauce has soy in it. if you have a specialty grocery store in the neighborhood, like as not they will have some no-soy asian sauces (i seem to recall seeing some labeled as such at a Whole Foods in texas... but that was YEARS ago. ) sorry i can't be of more help!

this recipe makes about 150... then again, we have a huge-ass extended family and this is something we always make a family reunions. 83 That's also why i stressed the need for at least 2 units of labor, to do the folding!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

K9-The-First In reply to sylvacoer [2009-07-04 15:58:47 +0000 UTC]

Is a unit like, man-power?

sylvacoer In reply to K9-The-First [2009-07-04 16:00:01 +0000 UTC]

I unit of labor = one person you can bend to your will. (it's marxist of me, but it works)
