"Mommy! Mommy, look! Look up there!"

"What is it, sweety? Mommy's trying to watch the dance..."

"There's a lady sitting in the tree up there! Look, Mommy! She's waving at me!"

"There's no one in that tree, honey, now shhh, you're interrupting the ceremony!"

"But...!"

Lien dropped her hand back to the tree trunk, smiling apologetically to the little girl. It was so rare, nowadays, that people could see, let alone not be frightened by, a spirit.

She had lost count of the times her descendants had run away, screaming about ghosts.

'Who'd have thought my line would produce such a run of cowards,' she mused as the ritual for rededicating the shrine over her grave reached its climax with the break of day over the rosy horizon.

Spirits were not supposed to dwell on human attachments, but Lien still appreciated the thoughtfulness of the islanders in holding the memorial service for their "most honored ancestor." While nowhere near as elaborate as, say, the annual rites paying homage to that girl Kyoshi on that cold rock down south, Lien thought the thousands of years of tradition added a certain weight to the service.

"And they had much better dancers this decade, I must say." The rites concluded, the participants and audience alike moved down the mountain, to the waiting festival.

Lien had her own appointment to keep. "She must have arrived by now."

The little girl gasped and quickly looked down at the path as the pretty lady who had waved at her from the tree suddenly vanished like a candle being blown out.

P.S. - So yeah... after the events of Tales of the Spirit World: The Fall of the Blue Spirit , Lien moved on, exploring other islands, eventually settling down on what became known as "Ember Island."

How she happened to become the guardian spirit of said island is, of course, the matter for another Tales of the Spirit World
