Description
2 x 5 feetOil on canvas
May 2005
Still life painting of two veils tacked to a piece of linen on a wall. I can see this as being a lot of different things -- two veils that a married woman wears in her life, or the black veil reminds me of a calligraphic ink shape, or an Annunciation scene. Or anything else not quite so dramatic

You wear a white veil in wedding, a black one at funeral

Wow. Well, lots of others have commented on the realism of this piece, and that they thought it was a photograph. Me too. At first I wondered why such a simple photograph was chosen as a DD. LOL! Absolutely astonishing.
It's the translucency and texture of the veils that really impresses me. If I look, and knowing it's a painting, I can tell the paper behind it is painted, but I have to look closely. But the veils...they still look like clear photos. Great job!

At least I'm not the only one who thought this was a photo . . . This is awesome. I love the concept of this. Two ceremonies, complete opposites and . . ya know . . all that good stuff.

you could say the black veil is what she would wear in a funeral

Itβs so simple yet underneath it's far more complicated, because you let people the choice to see that the veils symbolize for them, I took my chance.
The veils seems to be made of a see-through material, the kind that makes you believe you see while you don't in artistic nude photos or art, but while white make-up the image of virginal pureness of an angel - the black suggest otherwise, a seductress, a sin, The Lilth
Maybe different approaches to a woman,
during two periods of her life or during day and night.
Well, this for my own idea. I think I prefer yours better.

It could be the coatroom of some sadistic cult that cut each other with broken glass in an abandoned house with boarded-up windows. They are students of abstract mathematics from the University of Otty Whiz Bee and through their combination of abstract maths and quantum mechanics realised the meaning of life. This is why they are sad; there is nothing new to discover. Except pain. Lots and lots of pain.

I always saw it as a wedding, actually...the black is straight-up and self-contained, like a tux, while the white is flowing and airy...I just like wedding dresses.

that's a stunning piece of work!
i'd really be interested in your thoughts about this relating to an annunciation scene, just because we're studying portrayals of annunciation scenes at college & symbolism/metaphorical/abstract versions.. and i don't know enough about it to find intelligent meaning

thanks for the comment! i wasn't quite sure what you asked so sorry if i give too much information...the Annunciation is the scene in the bible where the angel gabriel tells the virgin mary that she will give birth to christ, and that is when she conceives christ by the holy spirit...so in this painting i kind of saw the white chiffon and black fabric as two figures, the white one is like an angel, the black one is the virgin (in a lot of annunciation scenes she's robed in black to signify that later she will mourn over christ's death), and i felt like the gesture of the white fabric was kind of like offering something to the black fabric, and between the white and black fabric there is a little cross crease in the center of the beige fabric, kind of like a symbol of christ...sorry i wrote way to much about this. i hope that helps!

Kudos to you for having such amazing paint skills. Besides that, there's something about the content of this work that really appeals to me. I don't know if it is the formal qualities of the black juxtaposed with the white or some implication of a narrative... I'm not sure but I prefer having that sense of mystery.

very interesting concept I like the way the white veil sorta flows outwards, perhaps representing youth, whereas the black veil is longer and hangs almost straight down, fairly lifeless and spiralling downwards like grief and regret
