Description E'sla proves that Tesla coils and Lichtenberg figures can still be fun, even decades and centuries later. I was going for Romantic-era paintings of science experiments in this drawing.

EDIT: took some critique into consideration and worked on this a little. Thanks ~Lindale-dA .

These critters have serial numbers in their ears? Are they all man made?

Yes. They're basically cyborgs. The numbers are put in their ears for identification identification. VI is their generation number (these are always given in roman numerals), the second is their series number, and the third is their individual number. They name themselves and use their nickname among their own kind, Humans usually refer to them by their numbers.

Thanks. I tried to mix it up a little by trying out a well known style within my own. I liked the idea of Romanticism portraying the sciences... and really I think of that ideal when I think of people's reaction to Mr Tesla's experiments. I think adding a little of that flair within my very futuristic world kind of worked.

Thanks.

I agree..that mix worked
and...you are welcome

I really like these characters - their appearance is simple but different enough to make them unique, and plausible enough to be believable

I also have a small lighting suggestion : the electricity from the Tesla coil (the thing E'sla has his hand on - I don't know much about Tesla or Lichtenberg so sorry if I'm wrong!) might be improved if it was brighter. At the moment the lighting on the characters suggests a very bright light source from above as well as below, but the brightness of the electricity doesn't seem to match.

But I do like the compositions of this - and all their different expressions too!

Thanks. Their expressions are kind of what I was experimenting on... with E'sla and his coil being the main focus. Some of them I think were drawn a little "cheesy", as I kept myself pushing that drawing while I felt sick (I kind of didn't want myself to give up.) But thank you very much for the compliment, it is appreciated.

I really dislike the fact that the electricity came out so dim... I might go over it with cloud blue (I was using non-photo blue), I think the clash comes in part that I was using pencil and kind of fighting the marker background, if that makes sense. I believe the back wall could use a little work too (that is done all in marker.)
This was a first time attempt on this kind of lighting source... it was to illuminate them as their primary light source, and since it's all directional (I don't know what's that called!) instead of the sun giving an angle or something like a lamp giving off a particular light source, it was to light them up at whatever direction they're facing the coil. I can see how it looks like the light is coming from the top because of the upper left group's crowns are illuminated.
I begin to run into these kind of problems when I attempt entire background/environment pictures, which isn't too bad, considering by making mistakes I learn.

Btw, Lichtenberg Figures refer to the pattern he's making in the acrylic. They are sometimes referred to as "lightning flowers" or "lightning trees" because the way a positive Lichtenberg Figure branches out. You can learn much more about them here: [link] The site creators do plug their stuff a little though, but it's not obnoxious (if you look on the web, you can find instructions to DIY one.)
Also, as a point of trivial, E'sla's name would have been Edison Tesla if he hadn't decided to shorten it, hehehe. He himself is a little paradox...

Thanks for the comment and I appreciate the critique.

I think that because your art style for this has outlines and block colouring, it gives it enough of a cartoon-ish style that you can get away with cheesy expressions

I don't use traditional media enough to know how you'd go about brightening the light source, but I remember how difficult it is trying to get a light colour to show over a dark one!

That website doesn't work (at least not at the moment, anyway)

Haha, E'sla is definitely a quirky character

Thanks. Yeah, I think the only way to brighten it is to put a lighter, and if needed, "stronger" media over it. I think I'm going to go back in and fix the patchy wall anyways.

I looked up the link problem, I messed up the URL, so it should work now: [link] And if it's still stubborn then there's always the wikipedia article: [link]

If you want to learn more about E'sla, I have a quick reference/biography of him: [link]

Thanks for interest.
