When you're out and about, do you also play the "guess that bird/song" game?

I love hearing spring birdsong, but it's becoming disturbing how serious the decrease in bird variety is occuring in our environments. Seems some species are so numerous it's redic, but some others are so rare that the contrast is alarming. Nature is becoming alarmingly unbalanced.

yeah it is kinda disturbing to actually see a decline in the bird population.... I have very few Goldfinches, not many Eastern Bluebirds and the Kestrel's that used to nest here are now only migrants passing through. I do have tons of Robins and Sparrows though....

I haven't seen a Ruffed Grouse now in 4 years....those birds I really miss the most.

  it all boils down to the total environment.....residential and commercial  developments, they take away so much housing/living areas for the wildlife, in the past 2 years I've lost over 100 acres to this problem, and now I rarely see my Foxes or Coyotes. Thankfully I still have the Farms to roam, and these are protected by conservation covenants on the deeds, so they will never become housing lots!

You're right. It's heart breaking to think about how much we are missing out on....how amazing and grand it must have been even just one century ago...not to mention hundreds of years....I know life must have been harder but at least it was not so unbalanced.
