Description

Yixians extreme faunal diversity comes primarily from the sheer amount of smaller animals present, be them Pterosaurs or Dinosaurs Yixian is full of small animals with few exceptions, today we look at one of those few exceptions, Yutyrannus huali!

Yutyrannus huali is among the three most popular medium class carnivores featured in parks alongside Allosaurus fragilis and Carnotaurus sastrei. Standing at 7.5 meters in length and 2.7 meters in height this animal is in the upper size scale of the medium classification of Theropods and stands quite literally head and shoulders above the rest of the animals in its size classification due to a pair of rather long and powerful legs.

Yutyrannus, despite its long arms and legs and somewhat long jaws, is not an Allosauroid, instead Yutyrannus is a relative of animals such as Guanlong sitting as a highly specialised Proceratosaur, however the mixup with Allosauroids don’t just end at superficial things such as looks, behaviourally this animal resembles Allosauroids much more than other Proceratosaurs and even other Tyrannosauroids in general.

The behavioural patterns of Yutyrannus are heavily reflective of those seen in the much larger Allosaurid Saurophaganax being a partially social animal living in groups of three animals, typically all of the same gender, and being highly aggressive towards individuals outside of this group. There are however some key differences, while Allosauroids like Saurophaganax will separate off from the main group to raise young, Yutyrannus will raise their young communally, a behavioural trait seen in many smaller Proceratosaurs such as Dilong and even the other giant Proceratosaur Sinotyrannus. During feeding the similarities to Allosauroids only continue with Yutyrannus having a strict hierarchy within its groups as to which animal feeds when and even where on a carcass, however in a park setting this is not ideal as it can lead to slight malnutrition in the lower ranking members of the group, thus staff are advised to closely monitor Yutyrannus during feeding to ensure all individuals have eaten an adequate amount of food and more food is provided if necessary.

Thank you all for reading, expect more from us soon.
