One can put in however many sophisticated formulas into the 'machine' to get complex, mind-boggling patterns and ingenious, simple curves... But only the one with an eye for art can express his emotions and credibility through the 'mathematical' piece. It's just like any other medium of art.

I'm sure many would agree that fractals can be art anyway, with reason or not.

Impromptu submission to illustrate my point, but I like this piece either way.

As people draw stuff with their materials, and photographers picture what they see with their equipment, fractals could be said to have mathemathical equations as their material, and so it's just like all the other art forms.
Even though it is not the hand that makes the patterns, but it's not the hand that sets the lighting in photos, it's the sun.
So in the case of fractals, I suppose it would be the work of the brain to calculate the proper formulae, and up to the machine to accomplish it.
It's still the brain that does work.
And creativity comes from the brain.
So, yes indeed, fractal art is an art form, just not physical. It's all in the mind.
