From left to right: Marv-El/Clark Kent/Captain Marvel (Captain Marvel/Superman); Diana of Themyscira/Diana Blake/Thor (Thor/Wonder Woman); Barry Maximoff/Quickflash (Quicksilver/The Flash); Hal Rider/Green Nova (Nova/Green Lantern); Al Pym/Atom Ant (Ant-Man/The Atom); Bruce Banner/Bane (The Hulk/Bane)

While Nova Corps recruit Hal Rider is tracking a small band of Chitauri (an alien race known to Humans as Parademons) across New York City, he meets Al Pym, the size-changing superhero known as Atom Ant, who assists him in taking down the aliens. Following the last one into the sewers, they witness it attaching the Cosmic Box to a wall, which blows up. Green Nova creates a safe construct with his ring, protecting the two heroes. Green Nova and Atom Ant head to Metropolis, to seek the advice of known alien Captain Marvel (the Kreetopian Marv-El, known on Earth as Clark Kent), but when they arrive, Captain Marvel attacks the two, thinking they are behind the invading Chitauri. Not being able to damage Captain Marvel, Green Nova decides to call in his friend, Barry Maximoff, the Superhero known as Quickflash. After a while, Atom Ant calls the fight off, explaining that they are not the cause of the invaders, but are investigating them, and came to him for help. While discussing the box, it activates, letting a load of Chitauri through. Elsewhere, the Amazon Diana of Themyscira, known as Diana Blake, but known to the world as Thor (due to the Gods giving her the power, and name, of the God of Thunder), is caught in her own battle with some Chitauri, and comes to join the others.
Suddenly, the anti-hero known as Bane (real name Bruce Banner), arrives and attacks the heroes. He practically defeats all but Captain Marvel and Thor, whose power outdoes his. Soon it is revealed that Bane is being controlled by the alien Thanos, known as Darkseid, who has come to Earth through the Cosmic Box. The heroes manage to get Bane out of Darkseid's control, and together, the six of them defeat him. From then on, they decided to band together as a team, with a writer dubbing them the "League of Avengers (in a similar vane to the World War II-era team, Society of Invaders).
