This is not a specific criticism of your work, but more of a general question about this particular trope in sci-fi: Why the hell do we see such incredibly powerful energy sources in such close proximity to where people can be? I blame Star Trek the most, but really? The Reactor Compartment on the sub I once served on was not only locked with giant padlocks, it had big steel strongbacks on the one access door. There were three windows to look inside it, all made of several inches thick leaded glass. Two of them didn't even face the reactor. The third was you looking down at an angled mirror you could position with a handwheel to see the reactor.

You know... just use Your imagination. Reactors we know these days are not safe environment for human beings. But there can be in the future specific reactors based on neutrinos or different kind of reactions, that will be not harmfull for us. It's still impossible to build interstellar spacecraft with huge mass and huge amount of energy to run.
Think about one interesting thing... Design of the sci-fi artists is indroduced in modern constructions like phones, tablets, computers, cars. etc. Imagination conected with science is great force that is still changing our lifes. There is only one bad thing, consumption oriented development of technologies, not future oriented... We are producing new cellphone models, we are thinking about how to sell something, not about how to make possible interstellar flights.
