I'm not hating, but I ask people nicely what furry is about, and I get told resoundingly it's not sexual, then I see art that implies that it is sexual, or moreso, some images are very sexual. So can somebody explain it to me? I'm not interested in it for myself, I just wish to become more tolerant about the whole thing, to understand what this is about, so that I dont feel alienated every time I see it.

It depends on the person you ask, but the actual word for sexual themes in furries is called "yiff." But people who haven't heard of the term or seen actual furry (excuse the term) porn have no idea about it. Sadly, I was exposed to it by my brother and it has forever been etched Into my brain x.x But, yeah, it depends.

There's this show called taboo that did a segment on Furries and it may help you understand it. The way they explained it, the sex part of that doesn't apply to everyone. In general a furry can be a person who loves animals enough to want to be them. Some dress in fur-suits and go to conventions but don't indulge in the sexual aspect of it. The way they explain it, sounds like a furry is just another animal lover or outcast who's er in a sense tired of being human and wants a little escape from daily life.

hello! Everyone has their own definition as to what a "furry" is. For example, I personally consider people a furry if they participate in fursuiting, going to fur conventions and stuff like that.
Then there's people who just enjoy drawing anthropomorphic animals, and there's nothing wrong with that. Yes, there are some artists who draw very sexual images involving anthros, but when you really think about it, that's something that's present in almost every fandom out there, not just the furry fandom. For example, some bronies (Fans of my little pony) draw very explicit drawings of the very well-known pony characters. Even some characters who are considered under-age in the show. But that doesn't make ALL bronies sexual deviants out fapping to cartoon horses, right? Same goes with furries. Not all of them draw sexual images involving animals/anthros.
And I personally find this image to be very romantic and rather tasteful. (I guess i'm biased since it's an image of my boyfriend and I x3) These two characters are our sonas, which represent us in real life, so I personally don't see anything wrong with a little romance drawn between the two c:
So again, everyone has their own definition as to what a "furry" is. Just remember that not everyone involved in the furry fandom is a sexual deviant drawing nothing but sexual images. It's just a bad stereotype that's been around since forever.

I wasnt saying that all furries are fetishists, just that I had been told by some people that none of them are, and I was suspicious of this. It is clearly a spectrum, like most fandoms, that go all the ways from chibis, to portraits, to pairings, to slash, etc.

I don't get why people make such a big fuss about it entirely tbh, it's art at the end of the day. That figment of your imagination that's visual.
Actually... it depends from person to person xD people call me a furry cuz I draw anthros a lot, even though I don't go to cons or anything. I'd love to though, just to meet new people. It's like cosplaying, instead of being an anime char or a fave game char, you're your own OC.
Of all pictures I posted on dA... this one particularily had to be the chosen one to start debates on what's a furry.

I completely agree! And yeah, there's a lot of people who call me a furry too for the same reason (..though i'm guilty of the dark side of the arts) but I don't go to cons or fursuit or any of that stuff, but I plan to one day!
At the end of the day, people can call me what they wish! I personally don't take any offense to being called a "furry" because I don't view it in a negative light haha.
And yeah, i'm surprised it wasn't another pic of you and the mush that sparked these comments xD
