Description
Sideshow Bodhisattva was inspired by a fantastic image by "chain & jane". I wanted to add in a little twisted quality with the dwarves and quirky circus props. The main figure is Miki 3 from Smith Micro, wearing a customized version of Esha's Levante, an artist at RuntimeDNA. The dwarves and circus props are also from RDNA artists Sixus1 and LukeA. The helmet is custom morphed and textured to resemble a Balinese head-dress and started out as the Warrior Princess Helmet from Daz.The image was created for Smith Micro, and rendered in Poser Pro 2010. There is minimal post work, primarily dodging the Ringmaster, Clown and Snack girl to help them emerge from the background.
The image was rendered with a 2.2 gamma, in 24bit/pixel HDRI for full dynamic range (it really, really helps produce additional color depth and contrast), and converted to 8bit in Photoshop, with an exposure gain of +1.0. Each full image render was executed at 4500x6000 pixels so we'd have an image that could be printed as a small poster. The final render took approximately 10 hours on an 8 core i7.
There were four major render passes before arriving at the final. Thank you for the project Smith Micro!

Beautiful image! I love the pulpy lighting, the complex scene, and the additional characters. I see what you mean by flat, but if you move the key light more to the other side so that her face is obliquely lit and to keep the cool blue side light, and dim the fill light a bit I think you'll find what you're looking for. Also soften the key shadows a bit and the fill shadows a lot. You're pretty much there already.
Imagine a world where bodhisattvas are sideshow freaks who turn tricks after hours. Where will we be then? Are we there now?

Great feedback - I've clustered my character key lights to her front right, with one further to the side for more depth in the facial shadows (softened as well). Also added in a warm side light to the left to help her further pop from the BG. The helmet is now gold, and morphed closer to a Balinese head-dress, and the 3 characters in the background have a little more lighting so they can be read easier. I'll have to post the latest version before the weekend - still playing with transparency on her pants

One last 12 hour render starting in about 30 minutes; I should have a final image sometime tomorrow.
