I always felt that Doom was in Crash's brigade. Their helmets are both the same as well as their gloves so it makes sense, right? (check the skins in an md3 viewer if you think I'm lying ) Well, I think that there is a lot more going on. This is my story:

Doom used to have the highest level of authority, commanding even Crash. Rumors had it that she and Doom even had a relationship together. But due to unfortunate circumstances resulting in the murder of one of the generals, Doom was put as the scapegoat and was demoted to the lowest position possible: infantry private. He now struggles to gain his rightful position as Colonel, even if that means, ironically, to kill those who destroyed his career.
