Description

Caduceus, herald's wand/staff .

This thing is my headworld take of the Caduceus. It is usually two amphipteres, circling a wand, sword, or even pen. Serpents, colored black and white, are facing outwards. It is rather popular symbol, found in science, medicine, law, heraldy and many other places. Mainly what matters is that what is the object what the serpents are handling, and in serious occasions the serpents are always in black and white.

¤ Liners and watercolors. I had this sketched and scanned since 2017 and just stuck there in photoshop until I was that screw this I'm making it traditionally, and it got done.

U know, Mercurymon has this staff as a weapon besides his "Aztéc" knife apparently. But nowhere is he seen wielding it.

High five for the caduceus! It's always exciting when worldbuilders reenvision the archetypes common in our own world-- crosses, narratives, things we see in the sky, motifs in general. Sometimes the meaning is the same and sometimes it's completely different. There lies the fun.

Anyways, this is a gorgeous design. I like how the black/white coloration is only used in grave situations. Is this a common practice in Enneanres, that the colors black+white means "higher level of seriousness"?

*pokes at you*

Tooo the topic. I admit I left some headworld babbling out of there because very few would understand anything about it. :v The black and white refer to the two main "intellectual" species, Datyle and Hellgriff. (Since I called gryphons back from extinction. All thanks to the weird human AU. I just needed them back.) Both have tendercy to think how they're better than anybody else, and only ones which are able to handle politics in that level that the society works. (My species are not multifunctional like humans, they work together better, but alone they can't handle bigger masses.) The difference is mainly that datyles think that "you can't do anything right, let us handle this" vs. hellgriffs' "you can't do anything, let us teach you". So, the two, with opposing views (like the snakes here) but still kind of working together because they want this big game called society to actually WORK. (I still think that this would be more visible in the human!verse, but this happens in actual Enneanres too). Unfortunately sometimes they play their political games with cost of other species. Like dravenes, big and powerful, are very good tools. But they're just stubborn individualists who lack the "pressure of the mass". So, to have a bigger group of them, to fight for one goal, is that you should be able to move each one individually. Hard, but possible. And in the end dravenes are called brutal when the actual background problem is nearly always datyles. Hellgriffs don't start wars that often at all. Their bad repute instead is that there has been a few especially cruel individuals through history. Just a few but people remember those better than several a quite bad datyles.

So the gryphons once again roam with the other races! I think I remember you mentioning this once and it's a really cool update. I especially like the contrast between datyles and hellgriffs and how most folks would expect the hellgriffs-- all claws and shadowy wings-- to be the aggressors. Nooo. As in real life, every group has their beliefs and way of going about it.

Do/did the hellgriffs and datyles interact often, by the way? And would you say the hellgriffs had the same amount of influence on modern society?

At the moment I THINK that datyles have major grip in THERE and hellgriffs THERE (and I need that map), but this whole thing is still pretty much under thinking. Datyles have been in command so much until I brought hellgriffs back from death. :v ... What if I steer a bit off-topic and tell some funny facts that datyles systematically dispose their kids which are mentally underdeveloped (and just their own kind) and it's considered normal and fine behaving amongst them, and hellgriffs put their own deceased brethren into small components and sell them to whoever may have use for sort of magical components and this as well is completely normal use for a body.

That's crazy! Selling the dead is def the more normal of the two, after all our own traditions can get kinda grim-- famadihana and this ritual come to mind. But culling your children as you would a bad litter of puppies? That's a eugenics horror story! And yet, completely unsurprising given datyle culture. "Gotta do what you gotta do", right...? @@;

Humans, stop being creepy with your cultures. :v

I don't remember what things I've babbled out of my critters already, but datyles have sorta freaky growing phase. First years they have merely a fraction of their potential brain capacity in use, so the parents have pretty literal "pet bird". Most of the brain grows somewhat separately, like if you lived in a tiny hut and build a mansion there at the same time. One day their "baby brain" connects with the actual brain, and they start to understand things (they're still kids and have lot to learn, but it's still a sure "whoa" -experience). Now the parents can start growing their offspring like a datyle. IF this connection doesn't happen, and the kid seems to remain at the level of a crow...then there's no use for that kid anymore. :'v

Oh goodness, could you imagine?! Humans have such a streamlined way of growing up, that if there are mistakes during infancy it's easy to correct in time. Not so with datyles, it sounds! Your kid doesn't grow up right, they get the boot.

(I've always admired your level of worldbuilding. It hits a sweet spot: not quiet alien biology, but too different to be considered human. It's unique, and so fun!)

I always thought the serpents symbolized healing and birth, something from Greek mythology

Something like that, yet I leave my world interpretation more open as this is commonplace symbol.

Toisaalta tekstuuri on jotenkin kaarnamainen (etenkin jonkun männy tjms. havupuun tapainen) mut väri punainen graniitti. Jännä enigeis.
