Description
Grumpy as always.Somebody may remember this ...I was going to make a full-body picture ever since, now I did it (with little design changes). Perkele is thunder god in old myths, now more in everyday life in form of most popular swear word (and one of those words all Finns like to teach their foreign acquaintances). I wanted him to look sort a troll and maybe a bit devilish, yet still something that would fit into Finnish environment. Cloven hooves of reindeer, fur coloured like pine bark, horns of granite. And grumpy attitude.
Perkele's origins are old, at first he was the god of thunder, but after Christianity arrived, Perkele was demonized and wrongly referred as a devil. Perkele himself didn't like at all that his people were brainwashed to this belief, he even burnt down multiple churches with his thunderstorms.
Times went by and people learned to protect their buildings from lightnings. But also, religion's meaning has vanished. Perkele has no believers like in ancient times, but his name has always been in Finnish language and through every swear Perkele knows these are his people and he likes them. Perkele himself has turned more familiar from ancient thundergod status. He's among people in railway stations when trains are late or watching fights in kiosk queues. He may have as bad habits as any clichΓ© Finnish man, but he's proud of his people. They still swear more to him than other gods.
Liner, colour pencils.
(I know people have different opinions how Perkele should look like. Then just say this is so said "MoA's Perkele". |>)

The true test of his Finnishness: Does he like lutefisk?
That said, this is awesome. I especially love his hooves! God or devil, I'd fear his wrath.

Kaunis peikkomainen luukki, ja tykkÀÀn jotenkin sen lantiokarvoituksesta - tulee mieleen vanhat puupiirrokset joissa paholaisilla on ihan sairaan karvaiset alapÀÀt ja jalat korostamassa sitÀ elÀimen alaosaa.

Nyee, the thunder god is back. He looks less godlike in this one and rather has some sort of "Troll"-effect. Not sure how to describe that but it's good you actually wanted this trolling thing because somehow it shines through. (Even though I still have no clue what someone who is trolling looks like. Weird... I seem to know enough to notice it at some creature without knowing at all) At least it was my first thought when I saw it x>
And now something that doesnβt belong to this one too much: I liked that first picture a lot and usually looked at it at least once when browsing through the gallery. Nowβ¦ was that one long black stripe in the ear at the old picture on purpose? The βearsβ looked like big feathers to me with some sort of leave-fur look. Iβd just like to know if it was supposed to be that way and now looks different because of the further distance or if he changed to complete common fur instead as one of the design changes. (In case it was done on purpose at least x>)
seems like I had nothing clever to say that day. There is no comment from me on that picture. pft shame on me! About time I tell I liked <_<
Aaand as itβs said he watches everyone; I guess Perkele is either invisible or common god status then so he can do that? Or does he have some shape shift skills? And what are bad habits of a Finnish man? Anything special or just the usual wieldy known manly stuff? X>
Should stop asking half-obvious things
For picture itself: I still have no clue how you manage to color with colored pencils like that. I mean... cut out eye and horns alone and I couldn't even tell if that was done traditional or digital due all smoothness. I'd never even get to the idea it could be colored pencils, Haha xD Not to mention this even has blue and purple colors for shadings in it. Whenever I tried something like this it got messed up hardly x> But here it gives some sort of strong shading (especially for the chest and his right leg) and makes it look less cartoony.
Also love those hooves. They have such a 3d reality look~ (Most hooves I see usually are just flat as Anime movies do it for horses. Even when they are goat hooves. I should keep that in mind myself. That look the second "inside wall" gives is damn nice) It's nice to see one of your monsters have lips too. Most of them have beaks, reptile snouts or some other hard surface (or are Digimon and less realistic detailed) so lips are kinda rare for you. Especially when they are a lot darker and well visible as these.
Now random question: Did any other Finnish god changed their names to some sort of words that are used in common language nowadays?

For me "troll" is still something not internet related. Or at leats I can make the difference.
First picture he didn't have any stripes, those are just insides of his ears (just strongly shaded) x>. He still has long, coarse and messy fur, first picture included more details because, yes, it's scale is different.
Perkele is invisible most of time (what I have thought). He is a quite grumpy, not talkative, but he likes his people and appreciates them in all weirdness (he doesn't harm his people, sometimes even guides some of them a bit). He likes alcohol, to fight with bears and sit in the sauna. He is still some kind of god, so his exact kind of existence is a bit weird.
His size is slightly bigger than adult man, but he's powerful. He's not too "god-like" god, he's a god who appeared in the evergreen forests of north, among people who were primitive and in their own peace in the times when Roman Empire ruled southern Europe.
Many colours together and then a bit blending (I bought some colorless colour pencils from eBay and I love them).
No lips often since a) skulls don't hav lips b) beaks don't have lips c) I don't like to draw lips (usually...but for Perkele they fit).
Many names are common human names nowadays. Some are swearwords. Some just...nothing but mythology.

Maybe that's because the only time I hard about "troll" were either that fantasy species and.. well... next Troll was internet related. I never hear it being used by anyone in real life.
Ah okay. So no feather ears but fur.
And this was something like a whole second artist comment for Perkele, haha xP But thanks this explains about anything I could have asked x>
Colorless pencils = those? [link] I used them a lot during school time and bought some more a few weeks ago. But I kinda doubt you mean those. I never heard of any other pencil blenders though.

Nope, those things just smudge colour around (like using fingers). I have [link] this. (Or a few of them.) A colour pencil with smooth colourless colour, just how cool is that.

After "hei" and "kiitos" and "ole hyvΓ€", "perkele"was the fourth word I learned in Finnish (but it was only by myself)
Great art, I like the colours and how you mixed the characteristics!

I guess that's what Finland looks like according to what you said?

Your color penciling has gotten better....I see some glues and green in there. What does Perkele really mean?
Speaking of teaching foreign acquaintances swear words, there's two Turkish swear words that's very common in the English language. Them being "Um" and "Sick"...
Um= that slang term for the female's nether regions.
Sick= Fuck, though it is spelt "Sik" in turkish. Especially funny when you know there's a religion out there called "Sikhism"

I'm still not fully pleased, this is neverending practice. And literally "perkele" means...nothing. Most common use nowadays is as a swearword, though its origins are from old myths as a thundergod's name. It's just a swearword, what is referred rude even if it has no real meaning. Funny isn't it?
For you English may be funny sometimes, I guess. |D

That's interesting, a word that has no meaning but means something rude.
When my mom first taught me those words I went for a whole year chuckling at every American highschooler who literally had to say "Um......" every five seconds.
German's sometimes funny too...During my travels across Germany I passed by these two cities: Gottingen and Borkum. what's funny is that Gottingen loosely means "My Ass" in Turkish and Borkum loosely translates to "My Shit"

Oh well, most of people are taught that Perkele = Satan and that's why they think it's rude to say. I've got myself out of that too well. xp Especially when Perkele is really different thing originally.
lol |D. In Finland there's a LOT of cities/towns/lakes/etc. that has more or less funny name on their own. Loosely translated here can be found Cheesedanger, Pants, Rectum River, Clueless, Allowed, Dumbass, Nibbler, Whore, Russia, Egypt, Bible, Hammering, Rubber, Hot, Fart, Boatfallen, Orangutan, Seashore (place in the middle of Finland far away from sea), Boobbottom, Stupid, Claw, Leatherpants (that's an island)....and so on. Maybe you got the point.
