And that's why Starswirl was trying to make the spellI do wonder though, what was Starswirl thinking when creating a spell that changes a pony's destiny? Why would anypony use it?

Perhaps Starswirl was thinking that the spell could be used to switch the destinies of ponies who truly were unhappy with their talents. And a pony could use it it to change their destiny either for the greater good or some other reason.Β

as far as use goes, it'll be as useful as a time travel spell. like what Twilight used once.
no pony in his or her right mind would use it though because one step on that prehistoric butterfly would pretty much end everything.
as for changing a destiny of a pony...well...huh. actually, i can think of a few ponies who really need it come to think.

Some way out speculation: maybe the spell was meant to let a single pony use the Elements, alone? In any case, Starswirl should totally make a functional destiny change spell and get out of there pronto! Filly Celestia and filly Luna are clearly more trouble than the CMC on overdrive.

He wasn't trying to change a pony's destiny. He was trying to FULFILL a pony's destiny. Perhaps he believed his own destiny was unlimited power. Regardless... the spell was incomplete... and THAT'S why it had such chaotic effect.
(Either that or Discord did it. That's going to be the standard theist answer from now on, now that he's de-petrified for good.)

Magic is linked to Friendship, and the Elements of Harmony. It makes sense that a spell interacting so strongly with magic might link to the Elements of Harmony, even if unintentionally.
The shows ends up pretty thematic, from details like this.

But. . . Β Wasn't he trying to make a spell to turn a pony into an alicorn? Β He came close, but couldn't get the spell exactly right due to not understanding friendship. Β The whole changing cutiemarks thing means he was close as the more spectacularly a spell fails, the closer you are to getting the right spell. Β

No? Β Celestia was the one who turned Twilight into an Alicorn, not Starswirl's spell
In the book "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell" Β Cadence told the tail of how she got turned into an Alicorn, and that was before the events of Magical Mystery Cure and the Starswirl's spell was still unfinished; and again it was Celestia who turned her into an Alicorn, not Starswirl's spell
So I'm pretty sure that's not what the spell does
