This is a very powerful painting indeed. To me, it represents true love. The couple are very much in love by the way they hold each other's hands. They stand on the edge of two mountains separated by a chasm. This represents the chasm that is between people. Love unites people, however they must trust each other. If either person begins to doubt, or distrust the other, they could easily slip and fall into the chasm. But, provided they love and trust eachother through all sorts of hardships, their love endures forever.
