It's amazing how much being in Knight gear suits him. Gosh, how much more deadly would he have been if he was made a knight and went into the battle using both a sword and his magic.
'After five minutes of battle, Arthur suddenly notices that enemy army is suddenly fleeing from the battlefield for no readily apparent reason. Though if he had happened to look 3cm's to his left he would have see, what his own army was seeing, Merlin doing a spectular magic display and scaring the opposing army away. However, Arthur is still blind and obvious as ever so thinks that it is he and his mighty blade that have caused the enemy to run away with their tails between their legs. He goes on to say as much as he wraps his arm around Merlin shoulders (asking if he spend the whole battle hiding?) while the rest of his knights and soldiers look from him to Merlin, rolling their eyes while in return Merlin simply shrugs, what can you do?'
Ok, I'll go away now, lol.
Still awesome picture! Really do wish it had happened for real!

Arthur was always so oblivious when it came to many things though this mostly was in the form of Merlin and his magic. Heck Merlin actually did tell him in a way in one episode and Arthur basically laughed at the idea of Merlin being a sorcerer. Merlin should have been changing Arthur's views on magic, shown him that's it not always an evil force but Merlin got so tied up in other things, like trying to get Mordred out of the way so he wouldn't kill Arthur, that Merlin helped along that fate rather than moving it towards a fate where Arthur lived and Merlin could become the sorcerer at Arthur's side he was meant to be.

I know, this is what irritates me most about the show. It's all well and good that he spent his time protecting Arthur, because yes that was his destiny, but it was only a part of it. The rest of his destiny was to bring magic back to Camelot as well as bring some order over it. He seemed to have just forgotten about that or when he does remember he begins listing obstacles that if he really tried, he could get rid. He spent way, way too much time trying to stop Morgana and Mordred, and granted these were things he needed to do, but with Mordred I feel he went too far.
It annoyed me that in The Disir episode that he wasn't called upon to be judged by them because 'hello, two sides of the same coin here' it's just as much Merlin's fault as it is Arthur's for magic not having returned to Camelot. As you said Merlin should have spent more time trying to convince Arthur that magic wasn't evil, nor is it good, it all depends on the sorcerer.
It was like, in season five and I guess season four, the whole goal of the series, bring magic back to Camelot, just got to hard for the writers to write about, so they just left it out and only brought it up in the show to try and prove that it would just be too hard to do, so just forget it, it's never going to happen and that is so annoying! The show didn't complete it's goal or keep it promise. Right from the first episode the goal was set, was it fulfilled?
Nope!
Not happy!
'sigh'Sorry, I'm done ranting now, lol

I feel like if Merlin wasn't completely drawn down into a deep and brooding depression that he somehow dragged himself back to Camelot and helped Gwen bring about the vision of bringing magic back into the fold since she and everyone else knew finally that Merlin was a sorcerer. That being done I then believe he went away, maybe traveled but not too far from where Avalon is and is still awaiting Arthur's return. Of course we don't get to see this on screen because they apparently won't be making anymore but this is now a part of my head canon so it counts to me. ^_^

That's the idea that I hold in my head too. So, it's my head canon too. Plus it makes living with the idea that show is over forever, a tiny, little bit easier to bear.

I feel like they might revisit it since the show supposedly has a large following/fanbase or so I thought. A sixth series would have been nice since that's what they said they would do along with three movies. But if the movies is all that's made that's fine with me though right now it doesn't seem to me many of the original cast would return since Bradley has said he wouldn't reprise Arthur and Colin is off doing a ton of things as well.
