Cloud is a fag. See, Edgar and Sabin in FF6 could beat the shit out of anyone in FF7, especially Cloud. Seriously, you get Edgar and Sabin on the same team, oh man shits gonna fly. A Fire Dance here and a Chainsaw there and you got some defeated losers. I downloaded the original for my computer (emulator) and I've been playing for like a week. Awesome stuff. And an awesome picture.

To answer your questions, FFVII was the best Final Fantasy because:
a. It was the easiest.
b. No other game put more work into the details of the world's history and the characters' personalities and background stories. Every character was non-cliche at the time, and every character, even non-playable ones, had intricate pasts.
c. The Death of Aerith. 99% of the people who saw that scene broke at least one tear. A moment of intense sadness that was not common in games back then, and is still the #1 video game spoiler. (Even though everyone pretty much knows it by now)
d. Cloud+Tifa Lifestream Scene. Dunno bout you, but when Cloud took off his helmet, I cried very intensely. THAT should've been the #1 plot spoiler.
e. Sephiroth. Not only is he the most bad-ass bishounen villain the world has ever seen, he also has a VERY complicated personality, set of motives, and history. Most people think he was trying to destroy the world, but he wasn't; he wanted to become ONE with the world. The Meteor wouldn't have destroyed Earth. It didn't the last time it fell, now did it? And everything he read in the library were misleading assumptions made by hack scientists like Hojo. He is the Ultimate Villain not only because he killed Aerith, but because he is actually simultaneously pure-of-heart, only wanting to avenge his mother by any means necessary.
f. Omnislash. To do this day, the coolest attack ever.
g. One-Winged Angel. The most popular video game song; it has been remixed numerous times.
h. G-Bike. The first mini-game of its kind, and the most intense one of the series.
i. Buster Sword and Masamune. Undoubtedly two of the coolest weapons ever created. They are sold on EBay more often than any other.
j. Highwind. Fastest airship in the series. Loads of fun.
k. Chocobos. No other Final Fantasy has a chocobo sidequest as complex, fun, detailed, and rewarding as this. If only the flying chocobo were included...
l. Gold Saucer. Roller Coasters, Arcades, Theaters, Gondolas, Battle Arenas, Chocobo Racing, Haunted Houses.... Need I say more?
I liked FF6 too, though. And although Kefka is one of my favorites, he's still stereotyped as being "pure evil". He has no background story other than that he was built by Gestahl. The scene where Celes jumped made me cry, but it would've been sadder had she died. Next time I play, I won't feel that way, unfortunately. Even though Terra was the main character, she didn't have much importance. You don't even need to get her back to beat the game! And the existence of Mog, Umaro, and Gogo is just puzzling.
Everything in FF7 made sense (regardless of whether or not certain individuals do not understand it). But FF6 had a lot of plot holes. I'll probably like it better if they make a prequel or something to explain more of the story, like about Maduin, Duncan, Leo, Celes, Setzer, Kefka, Madonna, and the mysterious hidden characters: Mog, Umaro, and Gogo.

Another big reason FFVII had more love (that hasn't been brought up) was the media/merchandising extravaganza that came with the release of the game around 1996-7 (after the launch of the Internet). And frankly, Square has only been milking VII harder and harder in recent years- which is sad because they're clearly starting to favor certain characters that weren't that important to begin with (*cough*Zack*). =_=; Too much pandering to the lowest common denominator of fans.
I played Final Fantasy 6 in 1994 for its first American release and never stopped loving it most as far as the FF series goes. ^^ I'll even go so far as to say VII basically took the majority of the VI story and repackaged it (with those qualities you mentioned above).
Oh well, real life isn't fair like that. Lovely, lovely homage. ♥ ^^

Well, I found Zack more compelling as an "absent" character- the kind who's influence is more keenly felt in their death than in life. =\ The more I see of him portrayed like one of the regular cast, the more he loses that intriguing aspect.

I think FFVI is the best in series, it has well balanced storyline (FFVII's storyline is kinda hard to understand), excelent characters (for example Kefka the first non-stereotypical videogame villain) and good humor. I think some people like FFVII more becose it was first relesed Final Fantasy outside of Japan or least it was in Europe.

Kefka was still stereotyped. He was just weird. Still one of my favorites, though.
The reason he's still stereotyped is because he still has that "destroy/take over the world for no reason" element. Unlike characters like Sephiroth, Kuja, Julius, and Seymour.

FF6 is my favorite in the series. I liked FF7, but I just couldn't get into like I could 6. FF6 forever!

I did play FF6 once when I was very little at a cousins house, and loved it. Though I never really got into it until I got older and bought FFAnthology (with 5 and 6). I say the game was gorgeous. Yeah, your kids who play the more modern FF are used to the advanced graphics and control, but the old school FF were just plain genious. Plus the music ROCKED! Yeah, they make take awhile to get used to if ya give'em a try you'll love'em. But in my personal opinion, 6 (or 3 if ya wanna go by its original title) was the best of them all. 5 was just too hard for me, x_X and 7 is just become totally overrated that I stopped playing it.
As for art wise, you did great on their expressions. I just love it.

FF6 is the best Final Fantasy, bar none (I played a Russian translation of the ROM a few years back before I learnt English). FF7 is only liked more on the basis that people just don't have the imagination nor attention span these days to deal with 'lesser' graphics. They see 2D and automatically get bored. They see 3D, however, and they are somehow able to pay attention. And perhaps it's the emo-ness of Sephiroth, Cloud and Vincent that makes it well liked in America. I notice that American teens are getting more and more into that emo phase. It's a fad soon to pass, if you ask me, but until it does, these little children will continue to turn their noses up at older, better games like FF6.

Yoo-hoo, 18-year-old college student here. I STILL like FF7 better than 6 even after all these years. Sephiroth, Cloud, and Vincent aren't emo, people just stereotype them that way to make them seem "cooler". Furthermore, DID play 6, and the majority of games I play are 2D. Who cares about graphics, especially since the storyline is the best part?

I honestly could never understand WHY anyone could like FFVII over FFVI, unless they hadn't played FFVI but that's besides the point.. Though to be fair FFVII does have some things going for it:
-Modern Setting. (Appeals to those who hate traditional fantasy.)
-Bishonen. (Rabid anime fangirls of the world unite! >__>
-3D graphics. (I'm not a graphics stickler but to many people they matter more than a good story.)
-Sephiroth. (*gags* Good character? Yes. Best villian ever? HELL NO.)
-Tifa and her wonder breasts. (O___o)
-Great Minigames. (This is one areas that in my opinion FFVII trumps FFVI.)
-Did I mention Sephy?!!?11eleven Liek lol.

I will have to agree with what others have said so far.
It was the first 3D-generation FF and for some reason that I will never understand, Sephiroth is considered a great character. Apparently he's the best villain ever...and he's sweet and charming enough to be everyone's boyfriend, too.
Maybe I'm blind but I'm really not seeing it.

I think it was the story and the kinda...cyberpunk(?) setting they gave FF7 [And Sephiroth --] that made it so well loved. I've only played a bit of FF6 myself (I'm going to get the re-make on the DS/GBA Whichever it's on..) so I can't really say much.

Also I think a lotta people discovered Final Fantasy with FFVII (I know I did) as it was the first one to come out for PC as well (gawd that thing crashed like there was no tomorrow... usually right when you heard the KSSSH death sound of a really really hard boss). Also you have to remember that the original games (up thru 6 I think) originally did not have cool CG sequences... those were added later. Someone correct me if I'm wrong... but as I understand it, it was all oldschool sprites originally. So FFVII was breakthrough with the CG screens and full 3D characters/scenery.

While this is true, there is also a hot debate whether Sephiroth was really a better villain than Final Fantasy 6's Kefka.
What you also need to remember is that though FF7 did set the grounds in terms of 3D gameplay and cinematic sequences, it was Final Fantasy 6 which introduced the steampunk, modernised setting which was to be used from then on in the series (with 9 being the exception...that said, Lindblum does take alot of steampunk influence to).

I actually enjoy FF6.
Many people forgot about it because FF7 was the first 3D-ish Final Fantasy but truly, the story in FF6 was very good.
