Honestly I found it fine. As for Carrey, he nailed it. Why ? Because the best Eggman for me is a heartless goofball. At no point did Robotnik show a shred of empathy in the whole movie and for that I am grateful. He's an asshole, he knows it and is more than happy at the prospect of making Sonic into a battery (thing he does in the comics with the Egg-Grapes...).

I have to admit that it annoyed me that the movie took so easy on the story. It contained the absolute minimum of a working story and left so much unexplored.

It puts us critics in a little embarrassing situation that the film does so well in cinema.

A movie doing financially well has never been a testament to how good it is. If it were, then the "Twilight" films and "50 Shades of Grey" would be indisputable masterpieces.

Furthermore, I personally feel like much of the movie's success is owed largely to external factors outside of the film (i.e. the redesign and the whole Twitter "Sonic vs Birds of Prey" BS).

Well, it's still a bit strange. Parasit has won many Oscars, including as the first non-English-language film to win the award for best film. It took Parasit three months to earn 203 million dollars on the world market, it took the Sonic movie 11 days to earn the same amount. Part of the success can probably be explained by the fact that it is a family movie. If the advertisement has managed to convince 1 child to watch the film, the parents will follow suit. Catch 1 customer, sell 3 tickets. Again, I agree that the film has flaws, but I think we critics should be more humble about what the audience thinks, because we all don't see one thing in the same way. What we see as important societal issues to highlight can be perceived by others as difficult to understand and boring. And what others see as entertaining can for us be seen as inferior.

Eh, I enjoyed it for what it was. And so did a lot of people that made it gross over 130 Million at the global revenue as of now.

But hey, at least it shows Hollywood what happens when you actually LISTEN to the fans rather than preaching a WOKE narrative to the audience, hence the disaster of "Birds of Prey".

As far as live-action video game/cartoon movies go, it wasn't terrible...but then again that could easily be said for just about every other live-action adaptation of a cartoon. Personally though, I'd rather not see this tiresome trend of "live-action" cartoons go too much further beyond this.

Well... I do admit that I was welcomed to the intent of a 'realistic' Sonic because there has been so many great Realistic Sonic concepts from the fans. Funny that the fans did better than the official producers, like what "Sonic Mania" did. However, the only reason I welcomed the newer redesign was because it had personality & emotion to his face, which was nonexistent in the original design, which I now admit is a Nightmare look. Sonic's look is not all that 'cartoony' but rather more animated as it adds a lot of realistic textures to his character.

This was also WAAAAAY better than most movies centered on Live-Action/Cartoons characters, Human to CG Character interactions, and of course, Video Game movies to which is proven by it's monstrous Box Office success. Golly, I talk too much.

Yeah, but the story is pretty generic when compared to the stories from the games, cartoons, and comics; which has always been my biggest problem with live-action cartoon adaptations. Compared to the original adventures the characters had in the original animated format the adventures in the "live-action" film is often times underwhelming...and then there's Jim Carrey.

Furthermore, I don't completely buy that the movie's box office success wasn't at least partially influenced by external factors. There were plenty of people online who were straight up telling people to go see the movie when it came out just because "they listened to the fans", and then there was that whole nonsense with the "Sonic vs Birds of Prey" Twitter BS; which was some utter silliness to say the least.Β

It wasn't meant to have an all powerful storyline like "Gone with the Wind" or expert acting like "The Godfather" and I'm so glad they didn't else it would over-complicate the movie & wouldn't be as fun as it is. Granded, it is a kid's film, also one that adults can enjoy. Like how "Willy Wonka" and "Wizard of OZ" were kids movies in some aspect.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I loved it when those salty-ass BOP idiots tried to bash on the Sonic movie by making up all this WOKE bullshit and backfired on their snowflake asses!

Sometimes I think live action movies had done more harm to VG/anime franchises than good. I have plenty of reasons why, just too much to enlist here. Corporations that run movies just can't seem to get it right the first time (or many times) but if I were a director, I would listen to the people first before putting off a project like this. Know what I mean?

Yeah. It's not exactly rocket science. There are some video game/anime IPs that just don't really work with a live-action format. 2019's "Detective Pikachu", for example, only really worked because the nature of the game/cartoon lent itself better to a live-action adaptation; aided by the fact that the filmmakers behind that film actually tried to do justice by the original story and characters; making only necessary changes as opposed to needless changes.

Making Sonic a live-action film was just stupid; the storyline is too surreal and borderline cartoonish to ever work properly with a live-action format. In just the games alone, Sonic has fought multiple robot clones of himself, defeated an ancient water god, saved the planet from a falling space station, helped stop an alien invasion, rescued other aliens from an intergalactic amusement park, fought evil genies and knights inside magic books, gone Super-Sayian, turned into a werewolf, defeated not one but TWO cataclysmic demons of destruction, and destroyed countless death machines created by Robotnik including one that could literally warp and erase the fabric of time and space...WHO SERIOUSLY THOUGHT THIS WOULD WORK AS A LIVE-ACTION MOVIE?!!

I see. The Live Action Pikachu worked, but the Sonic franchise live action didn't. I do agree with you on that. And if you thought that was bad, look at what Disney is doing to their once beloved cartoon movies, they're converting ALL of them into live-action which makes no sense. And if you want to hear more, just ask the Nostalga Critic. I seen some parts of his review on Aladdin.Β

That is like Disney's latest spate of live-action junk. Too lazy to come up with original ideas? Probably. Is it all about the buck? Undoubtedly. Why go to all the trouble and expense to come up with a new idea, when you can squeeze a few more bucks out of an old one? Especially when you're only creating direct-to-disk babysitting fodder. Can you say Pocahontas II?

The idea of Romeo and Juliet has been done many times recently. (Titanic is one) But, as in Titanic, in most examples it's unrecognizable. How many ten-year-olds today have seen the original Lion King? Let's just redo it live action.Β  The dumb kids won't know.

Hey Disney- Want a challenge? How 'bout a modern take on King Lear? Only with mice-
