Inspired by the cover art from Linkin Park's album Hybrid Theory.One of my Reach screenshots, this was a game of Stockpile on Swordbase.
Created in GIMP and Corel Painter.

might I suggest 2 things to help take this from good to great? first off a border couldnt hurt. even something as simple as a flat black line all around the edges about 3-5 pixels wide would do just fine. and also, the lack of outline on the characters makes this seem a little, idk, foggy? maybe an outline would ruin the effect your going for, maybe not. if you do try it and it dosent look good then maybe try a different effect to somehow either push/pull it into/out of the background layer? idk, needs something there.

I thought of adding a border, but I didn't know how I wanted to do it. I actually want to do a border that looks like I sprayed over a stencil and caught the edge of the board, but, again, I don't know how I want to execute.
I made the characters blurry on purpose in order to simulate a spray painted effect, but you're right in that there's a little too much blur on them. I just need to play around with my brushes a bit.

not sure what program your using but im sure theirs a brush tool or something to make a paint spray border. if not maybe try just doing a google search to see if anything catches your eye then edit/recreate it to suit your needs? theres always a work around if your creative enough

I use GIMP, PSE, and CPE. CPE has an airbrush tool, but I'm trying to decide on the how. A border all the way around, just in the corners, etc.
