tip edit: I forgot to say this tip: Draw what makes you happy!!!!!!!! I personally look at horrific faces and nasty teeth and huge creepy eyes and am like thas the good stuff. I draw what makes me happy And you should too!
based on question by Le-PineMarten
"bruh how do you do it, what is your inspiration? got any tip on making disturbing faces/designs?"
well bro (as well as anyone reading this now)
I gotta say these were the best three full designs I came up with out of 6 different faces.
A lot of times, what I show is the best thing out of a lot of other things.
So tip 1 is draw a lot, which greatly increases your chances of the stars aligning and what you make becomes something you really like
tip 1.5 is to learn to let go in the beginning. Initial designs can be dumb, sure, but if you're not holding back, that's when you find some pretty good stuff, or maybe even a mistake that turns out to be the best thing about a design.
tip 2 is to find A LOT of people whose work you like- and hoard the crap out of it
I have many, many, many, many many libraries of inspiration, in my google drive, my phone, my computers, my tumblr and even on DA- I'll say 'huh that's awesome I wanna do something like that' or 'hey that gives me an idea!' and then I'll save that in a folder called 'ideas and inspiration' in my favorites here, or under a tag like 'ideas' on my reblog tumblr, or just around on my phone, and then when I have the time to do something with it, I'll come back to it
super pro tip always label where you got an image from so you don't have to hunt down the artist later

here's my tag for body horror if you want to look through that too

tip 3 is to look at REAL ANIMALS AND PEOPLE-
you gotta know what it is you're messing up, if you wanna mess it up right

look at people who stylize things in a way you really LOVE
for example- my favorite stylization of horses EVER: sketches
feel free to look through my favorite folders, as well as my reblog tumblr, for any reference
I also made these a while back

all three of my ultimate reference sheets are up for everyone!
tip 4 ish
for me, personally, when looking at 'my vibe' things, one of my favorite inspirations are Onis, who have this lovely look with big eyes and big teeth, as well as rangdas- again, big eyes, big teeth.

www.google.com/search?q=rangda…
also look at apes and monkeys, man- they have crazy eyes and crazy teeth
here's mandrills for an example: www.google.com/search?q=mandri…
I also take some inspo from felix colgrave www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RHFFe… (be warned when looking through his other work, some stuff is nsfw)
I also like such body horror artists on tumblr as flatw00ds and jude clark (some nsfw also, look out)
flatw00ds.tumblr.com/tagged/bo…(don't know if it works on mobile)
artsydudejude.tumblr.com/tagge…(don't know if it works on mobile)
and finally, I just like demons and angels
sharkhorsereblogcity.tumblr.co…(don't know if it works on mobile)
sharkhorsereblogcity.tumblr.co…(don't know if it works on mobile)
For demons I don't really like the whole 'inverted crosses everywhere-super super evil and debauched' kinda vibe- I just like them when they look cool
Angel and demon concepts are an opportunity to make something that takes something mortal (usually humans) and either elevate it beyond our understanding, or twist it into something much different.
and final, kinda secret tip- find stuff that scares you, pinpoint why, and then make it work for you on other people.
keep this between you and me, man- I love drawing horses, but they kinda scare me irl
because they're freaky and scary if you think about it too much- and that's what I do with everything

Thanks a lot for the tips! I also always hoard my inspirations and write down some interesting concepts that I haven't drawn yet. Very rarely even dreams can be a help for me if they're coherent enough. I write down as many dreams as possible.
Sometimes a story for a character comes first and drives the concept design and sometimes it's the other way around. I also love using real life ideasand concepts and look why they work in nature etc. and then extrapolate them for an interesting effect.
It's really important to always keep your mind busy with ideas. One of my main sources is music, which often gives me a broad idea for a character or environment.
