The Alliance-class monitor is a very lightly armed capital-class rear line combat ship designed to strengthen system defense fleet groups.
The ship is based on an Intrepid-class light cruiser hull with a shorter main engines section and lacking the large engines pods that allowed the light cruiser to maintain it's excellent performance despite it's relatively heavy armor plating. It is even lighter armed than the Intrepid-class and more maneuverable than the light cruiser. It was designed primarily as a heavy patrol ship and patrol group leader that could perform cruising operations on it's own if required. The UFSN defines the Alliance-class as a monitor, the smallest type of capital-class combat ships according to their space vessel classification system. Most other nations would classify them as scout cruisers.
Alliance-class monitors are almost exclusively used by fleet groups tasked with planetary defense, system patrols or anti-piracy operations.
