Excerpt from Underground Arms Research Group entry C3-31102:
While craft produced firearms made by more or less competent individuals or groups were always a concern for many, the advent of early 3D printing technologies and their modern equivalents have made the illicit and undocumented production of large numbers of high quality firearms an undeniable reality that even the most extreme attempts to control access to technology and information just cannot change ... you just can't stop the signal.
These weapons vary greatly in appearance, features and quality, ranging from from barely functional cobbled together junk to professionally made.

This "machine carbine" or "open bolt assault rifle" is based on a MAC-pattern machine pistol/ submachine gun known as a PT9 and a more compact version of the "APT556 machine carbine". It uses a MAC-pattern lower receiver/ grip frame including the fire control group and plenty of other MAC-style parts probably in an attempt to streamline production. Furthermore it seems to have been inspired by several conversion kits sold in the 20th and 21st centuries for legally avialable fully automatic machine pistols in both design in function.
Both the simple grip frame made from high density medium quality polymer and the metal upper receiver were probably made with simple industrial fabricators ubiquitous on many worlds in human colonized space.
The weapon was allegedly manufactured by or for a group of anti-corporate government revolutionaries operating in the Joint Association Zone.
The gun is chambered in the venerable .223/5.56mm Remington cartridge, historically also referred to as 5.56mm NATO, fires from an open bolt and features a non-reciprocating charging handle. This particular example is equipped with a rail mounted red dot sight and a simple retractable stock commonly found on other illicitly produced weapons.
The only markings present are simple safety indicators, ace of spades icons and a barcode that contains information such as model number, serial number and code names for manufacturers and ponts of origin.
