The C-650 Mk.2 IAR is a shortened conversion of a COUGAR-650 SAR produced by COF in limited numbers after its contract with Serenity Military Industries expired and the company was free to direct all the available resources for in house products. The C-650 Mk.2 IAR is actually not a complete gun but a drop-in upper reciever, the lower reciever is a standard, SMI produced COUGAR-650 reciever fitted with an improved pistol grip.
The conversion kit was relatively expensive for what it is, due to a lack of parts interchangebility with the J-650 Mk.2 rifles that occupied most of the available production capabilities at the time. In the end only a handful of private military contractors and law-enforcement agecies were interested in the weapon and each acquired only between a dozend and a hundred rifles. Most of the C-650 Mk.2 IARs ended up being used in jungle combat on far flung worlds.
The main improvements over the original gun are greater support for readily available aftermarket accessories, an improved charging handle, that would later be used on later SMI produced Morningstar rifles, a lower top accessory rail and a much better ventilated handguard. The IARs barrel had been significantly shortened and does no longer feature the COUGAR-650s typical quick-change handle. In fact the C-650 IARs barrel is not supposed to be changed during a firefight, but it can still easily be changed during a field strip for cleaning or replacing a shot out one.
The C-650 Mk.2 is still chambered in 6.5x66mm CT and can fire a variety of anti-body armor and anti-exosuit rounds that makes it still reasonably effective against modern, heavily mechanized armies, like the Terran military. The C-650, just like JAGUARs is not nearly as effective as modern particle burst rifles or larger caliber firearms, but is effective enough when paired with heavy squad level ordnance, like grenade launchers, anti-material rifles or magnetic mass accelerators.
