The PBDC-1 - Guardian is a semi-automatic personal defense carbine designed and produced by SMI at thier main production facility in the city of Concordia around the new 12x34mm PBC cartridge. The carbine is based on the unsuccessful PBR-1 infantry rifle that was extensively tested by nearly all braches of the UFS military but not adopted. The development of the rifle was discontinued in favor of the new Morningstar rifles but develepment of a much more compact PDW continued.
The Particle Burst Defense Carbine came was developed based on a request for a compact defensive weapon for vehicle crews that was more powerful than a standard pistol or even a directed energy handgun. It was swiftly adopted by a multitude of armored units who were, for the most part, satisfied with the weapon. The gun was never widely adopted though as more powerful particle burst cartridge based pistols became available and even the more cramped tanks usually have enough space to store a standard bullpup infantry rifle or two somewhere and units who would not or could not adopt Morningstar rifles usually had no interest or capability to adopt a PBC firing carbine. in the end the PBDC-1 became a relatively rarely seen personal defense weapon mainly used by bodyguards and civilians.
The PBDC-1 has a significantly shorter effective range than a comparable firearm but is quite devastating at close range thanks to the 12mm PBC cartridge that unfortunately limits the magazine capacity to handgun defensive handgun levels though. It is still practically unaffected by "projectile drop", but of course heaviliy impacted by a loss of cehesion of the particle burst itself over longer distances or in particulary dense atmospheres.
The rifle's firing mechanism is based on superconductor cartridges that are filled with a special kind of solid fuel. The cartridges are chambered like normal rounds in an automatic rifle . When the trigger is pulled, the cartridge is vaporized, injected into the barrel and accelerated.
The bolt is operated by gas pressure and works the same way as on a regular firearm, the ejection port can be easily swapped from one side to the other and serves as a main heat sink and a way to eject a faulty cartridge or to safely unload the weapon.
If the weapon is fired weak sided for extended periods of time, the heat exhaust from the ejection port might significantly impact the shooters accuracy and comfort, the rifle would however shut down from overheating long before the exhaust could seriously burn the shooter's face.
