Description
Simba couldn’t wait! His guard, his own Guard officially put together, one to help him when he’s King. As soon as his dad told him the news and the preparations to put a team together he’d dashed off.

Off to recruit his friends.

Lemuta the Fastest, Daabi the Keenest, Makuu the Bravest, and Dhani the Strongest. It was perfect! He’d already found he was a great team with Lemuta, Makuu and Dhani. And Daabi could hear him from far underground, it was perfect!

He didn’t have a brother or sister, so of course he’d lead them! After all, it was his Guard.

He couldn’t wait to show his dad! Show off the next Guard, it was going to be great!

Moving to the slope, Simba grinned widely, “Dad!” He could see Mufasa sitting, back turned to him. “Dad I got my-!”

Suddenly Mwitu popped up over the slope, grinning broadly, “Hiya Simba!” The cub kept his head raised.

Stumbling to a halt, Simba blinked slowly in confusion at his friend. He stumbled forward a couple steps with a grunt as Dhani bumped into his back, Lemuta coming to a slow stop by his side. Daabi and Makuu farther back, trying desperately to catch up to the three.

“Uh,” Simba started, ducking his head, “hey Mwitu?” He blinked slowly as four other cubs moved over the slopes, staring at him. Wastani, Mtoto, Nadra and Chumvi. “What are you guys doing here?”

Mufasa answered for them, moving around the slope with a smile, “They were selected to be in your Guard,” he glanced to the five, chuckling warmly.

“W-what?” Lemuta whispered hoarsely by his side.

“Mwitu was selected to be your Fiercest,” said cub beamed.

“Mtoto, your fastest,” Mtoto smirked slightly, flopping down with a huff.

“Wastani, your Keenest of Sight,” they smiled nervously, ducking their head.

“Nadra your strongest,” she grinned sharply, raising her head up.

“And Chumvi, your bravest.” Chumvi jerkily raised his head up, grinning all the while.

Mwitu hopped up, still smiling, “isn’t it cool! We get to hang out all the time now!” He laughed loudly, tail flicking behind him.

Dhani sighed softly, and Simba knew he had lowered his head. He heard Makuu panting loudly, moving to stand beside his friends, Daabi asked carefully as she approached, “what did we miss?”

“Wha-but-I!” Simba shook his head, eyebrows furrowing, “no!” He blurted out. It wasn’t cool! He, Mwitu was fine, maybe annoying, but Simba didn’t want to be around him all the time! “But I told my friends they could be on the Guard!” He glanced to Mufasa wide eyed.

Mufasa blinked, looking flabbergasted. He glanced to Simba’s friends, frowning lightly, he asked, “Them?” When Simba nodded, Mufasa huffed, sounding confused, “Simba, it’s a Lion Guard.” He tilted his head, “The Lion Guard has always been lions.”

“But I- they’re my friends!” Simba responded, frowning deeply, “Lemuta is the fastest-!” Mtoto huffed, “Dhani is the strongest,” Nadra grumbled lowly, “Makuu is the Bravest-“

Chumvi leapt forward with a growl, “Oh yeah?”

“-and Daabi is the Keenest of-“ At that Mtoto just laughed, while Wastani physically deflated. Simba breathed heavily, eyes narrowing as he glanced to his friends, his cousins, “and I’m the Fiercest.”

Mwitu took a staggering step back, ears flattening, a quick emotion crossed his eyes, “Oh.” He said simply, ducking his head. He frowned slightly, keeping his gaze low, “ Oh. “

“Simba,” Mufasa sighed softly, and Simba flinched, glancing to his father, “they may be your friends, but the Lion Guard is for Lions.” He moved to his son, “this isn’t a game with friends, this,” he hesitated, frowning lightly, “this is a duty that will be their entire lives.” He glanced to the other young animals, frowning softly.

“This is not your responsibility,” he said quietly, having moved so close to talk to the five quietly. “You all have duties to your herds, your crash, your floats,” he shook his head lightly, “I cannot expect you to put that aside for this.”

“But-!” Makuu started, raising his head, “we can do it!”

“Would you be able to keep up out of water?” Mufasa asked, raising a brow. Makuu didn’t have an answer.

“We can help?” Lemuta suggested lightly, tilting his head.

“No,” Mufasa shook his head again, glancing to his son, softening lightly, “there’s plenty of lions, Simba. Mwitu will make a fine leader, and the others are a good fit for the Guard.” He sighed softly, “I’m sorry,” he glanced to the others, then moved away, “I think it’s time to go home.”

Simba watched as his friends slowly slunk off, heads hanging low. Mwitu and the others brushed by him, not saying a word. Mufasa staying by his side until he himself went to move towards Pride Rock.

Random thought: draw more complicated animals

So yeah, basically got inspired when I ran into the comics: A Great Team and Monkey Magic. In it Simba has three friends that aren’t lions, surprising. And reading through it basically gave me the inspiration.

Daabi I threw in cause she was another friend of his, and also Aardvarks have good hearing apparently (but terrible eyesight which is why Wastani was kind of hurt).

Lemuta and Daabi are scrapped characters, Makuu is from TLG of course, and Dhani I just gave him that name (couldn’t find a rhino character to give to the little calf).

Also say hello to the would’ve been Guard of Simba’s. Three of em maternal cousins, one a potential paternal cousin and the last a future brother-in-law. Yeah none of em were real happy with Simba for a while after this.

Little crocodile could change names since I have no idea how crocodiles age and potentially Makuu would be too old to be Simba’s childhood friend.

Eventually Simba will be in the same situation again, but this time he will be in his father’s paws
Also writing an adult Mufasa is hard, writing is hard. Might be another post in a couple days or so, depends on how I’m feeling.
