Description
Battle Fleet Cruiser Submarines
Cruiser Submarines for the battle fleet were large, long-rangeΒ boats with a heavy surface battery and a heavy torpedo battery. Some designs featured the ability to launch aircraft.
Cruiser Submarines for the battle fleet were envisioned as spreading out ahead of the battle fleet as distant scouts. Once contact with the enemy fleet was made the subs would report and then shadow the enemy attacking targets of opportunity as they arose.
After the anticipated fleet engagement, they would pick off wounded stragglers as the enemy retreated (or guardΒ the fleets retreat).

I think s sub big enough to carry "squadrons" would not fit the time period these are from.

These are nice, but only the top one is practical of course. I often wonder just exactly how the turrets were to be made watertight...

and why is only the top one practical hmm?

Because I see no practical way of making the turrets watertight, which is why deck mounts remained the standard for sub guns.
Only Surcouf had a "turret", which was really more of a casemate with limited traverse. I've heard it had problems with leaking. Such subs take a huge risk when diving deep with the greater water pressure...

That's it? In that case I have free reign in my writing with these things. Also the way surcouf and the m class did is far more practical because they don't need people to climb out the sun to use the guns.

"That's it?"
Leaks in ANY ship are serious enough, in a sub they're fatal...

I think I can find away around that and you me under the impression that the thing would be unable to function or spontaneously combust or something like that as par standard of any interesting design.

What it's true anytime I see a halfway interesting I'm usually given a list of reasons as to why it wouldn't work.

I do not believe the turrets were watertight, more just armored gun houses.

I've seen these drawings; I'm wondering if they were fixed mounts and not rotating...

My understanding is rotating. The drawing on the hyperlink would seem to support that.

I got an idea for something, ever try adding a missile/rocket pod on the sub?Β
