Description
The meerkat or suricate (Suricata, suricatta) is a small mammal and a member of the mongoose family. It inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa.I LOVE MEERKATS!! THEY ARE SO CUTE!!
I honestly have no idea where to put this
So this was the first painting I've finished for my Illustration I class! Our project was a rendering (is that right? it began with an r) and I tried to pick something out of my element that I've never tried to paint before!
AND I GOT A 94% ON IT!
I worked REALLY hard on this, and like all my paintings, I hated it when I started out. We used gouache paint ('g-wash, or gw-ash' ), which I've only used once before back in my Design I class last year. And honestly, I HATED it in Design. We had a cheap kind, and it was AWFUL.
So naturally, I already had a grim outlook going into this project.
But it turns out, even though I could only afford the cheapest paint kit (24 tubes for $12) the paint was surprisingly...nice! I'm rather addicted to it now
Though when I started out, I started with black as the bottom layer, and when I tried to add layers of yellow on top, it turned into a lovely color of green. So it took a while before it started to look good enough! We traced the image on first, and added a sheet of frisket around the outside so it would come out clean!
And my teacher, Mr. Bookwalter, helped me with instruction a lot! Especially the strokes on the last layer of fur, and telling me to add different colors, like reds and blues into the shadows as well!
(You can see a detail shot of the painting here [link] )
I also watched my new friend Caitlin a lot too! She is such an AMAZING painter, and she's done fur for years! So it helped out a lot too to stop every once in a while and watch her and get some input! (im trying to get her to get on DA!)
Her's was so cool! She did a little Lemur and a hand!!!
So I'm actually really happy with this, and not to mention it's a little Meerkat!! He's going on my wall!
AND I USED MY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THIS!! EEEEE!! *flies around*
Enjoy! And PLEASE let me know what you think!!

The lighting is pleasant, the reflection on the eye is incredible, and I love how you made the fur look so soft- particularly on the belly.
It just looks so lovable- you did a wonderful job
