Please look at my tutorial on how to dye fabric with RIT Dye

Here is the color grid of RIT Dye colors and how they take to different types of fibers. These were taken off of scans of the actual test fiber strips that we did in class, and I took every precaution to be sure that they remained true-to-life color. This does not mean, however, that they'll all display the same on every monitor - rather, this is just a guide for how the color takes, and the variations on each color that happen.

The strips (from the black line on) are as follows:
1: Spun Diacetate (think taffeta, satin, brocades)
2: Modacrylic (usually flame retardant fabrics, non-wovens, fleece, wigs)
3: Filament Triacetate (if the fabric is wrinkle-resistant, this is probably what it is)
4: Bleached Cotton
5: Acrylic (Creslan 61) (I don't know the difference between the different Acrylic fibers, but they seem to dye the same way)
6: Polyester (Dacron 54) (again, I don't know what the differences actually are)
7: Polyester (Dacron 64)
8: Nylon
9: Acrylic (Orlon 75)
10: Spun Silk (i.e. Silk)
11: Polypropylene (i.e. Polyester)
12: Rayon
13: Worsted Wool

Plus, the final two columns were because we did larger samples of cotton and silk.

I hope that this helps you out a bit - I'll have the tutorial for how to RIT Dye up shortly!

We did miss a few newer colors that they added to their production, but we did not have at school - sorry about that! Also, many of the discontinued colors can sometimes be found at stores still, so that is why I included them.

I can imagine!
Anyway, thank you again. This is a costumer's treasure.
For the record, also, linen takes RIT dye about like cotton does, from my experiences. Why you get a brighter result on nylon, of all things, than many of the natural fibers boggles my mind, but hey, better living through modern chemistry...

i love you so much for this, and the tutorial. RIT dye 's instructions are suprisingly hard to understand. [link]

Oh, I hear you on that one - the instructions on the package are rather... well, vague XP

I'm glad that this helps, though!

[link] has a huge selection of dyes and related supplies. Since using their products I have never gone back to RIT, nor would I ever want to. Great resource though!

I personally use ProChemical's dyes, but we had to do this project in our Painting & Dying class; we moved away from RIT really quickly, but for most cosplayers (and general costumers) the processes of prepping, setting and activating the various different types of dyes are just too complicated (and expensive)... hence the tutorial for the good 'ole RIT

Hmm Ive got a question. You say that if your dyeing something thats already got a color in it, the new color is a tint. If thats so what color would a pink (almost white color like pink) turn if I dye it with a dark brown? Cause the rest of the fabric I dying is medium-ish brown, but its got thick (6cm) stripes thats light pink.

taeliac In reply to Kazu00 [2008-07-28 15:14:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, as far as I know (I've never dyed stripes before) You're just adding color over the top. The pink, if it's light enough won't do much except perhaps make the brown a little bit more on the red side, but probably not much. The main thing is, is you're still going to have the stripes there, if that is okay

Usually, the brighter the color, the more noticeable of a tint it would be, so like a hot pink would definitely start showing through

Oh awesome!!

Just, as always, do a test to make sure it comes out right, but... yeah! I figured it would be helpful for lots of people, because I didn't even know what colors were what!

I think all the crazy things after acrylic/polyester in parenthesis are different brand or company names for different blends of synthetics. But it's still all basically the same, like you said.

taeliac In reply to MedeaHiasobi [2007-10-30 02:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that makes sense. I thought it migh thave something to do with the chemical composition of the whatnot, but I have no idea.

Either way, they took the dye basically the same way...
