Please look at my tutorial on how to dye fabric with RIT Dye

Here is the color grid of RIT Dye colors and how they take to different types of fibers. These were taken off of scans of the actual test fiber strips that we did in class, and I took every precaution to be sure that they remained true-to-life color. This does not mean, however, that they'll all display the same on every monitor - rather, this is just a guide for how the color takes, and the variations on each color that happen.

The strips (from the black line on) are as follows:
1: Spun Diacetate (think taffeta, satin, brocades)
2: Modacrylic (usually flame retardant fabrics, non-wovens, fleece, wigs)
3: Filament Triacetate (if the fabric is wrinkle-resistant, this is probably what it is)
4: Bleached Cotton
5: Acrylic (Creslan 61) (I don't know the difference between the different Acrylic fibers, but they seem to dye the same way)
6: Polyester (Dacron 54) (again, I don't know what the differences actually are)
7: Polyester (Dacron 64)
8: Nylon
9: Acrylic (Orlon 75)
10: Spun Silk (i.e. Silk)
11: Polypropylene (i.e. Polyester)
12: Rayon
13: Worsted Wool

Plus, the final two columns were because we did larger samples of cotton and silk.

I hope that this helps you out a bit - I'll have the tutorial for how to RIT Dye up shortly!

We did miss a few newer colors that they added to their production, but we did not have at school - sorry about that! Also, many of the discontinued colors can sometimes be found at stores still, so that is why I included them.

Thank you so freaking much. I have been on a mad search for this exact thing. I am thoroughly disappointed that Rit does not have anything like this on their site.

Way late reply, but yes!! I agree, it's so crazy that something like this is so hard to find! Although, I will admit, when we ordered the testing fabric for class, it was stupid expensive (think like $40/yard) but still. You'd think this would be the main selling point on their site or something :\

My cotton fabric is already the color of the Yellow -1 row and the Cotton Colum. It is a very light pastel color. So am at a loss how dying it will come out. It is a store bought couch slip cover with no place to snip a sample peice to try. They call the color Natural since it isn't white. Think of the color of whipping cream before you whip it.
Help. I am thinking of a Navy or Royal blue or Purple dye but will the two blues turn to green with pastel yellow fabric? And the Purple dye just turn the fabric some weird shade?

not sure why I didn't have this favorited earlier - I think because by now I know "If I need costume help, check taeliac's DA first!" lol

Planning on making a Mai (from Avatar) costume for AX, and I have tons of this white cotton fabric lying around that I think may work, if I can dye it the right colours. Going to do a test-run first, of course.

Hello, I dont know if you have answered this question before but would you happen to know if bottom weight fabric takes well to Rit dye? My fabric store has two colors of bottom weight...black and white...XD but I need it to be an Auqumarine color.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Shiro-Shiro-chan [2009-11-29 17:37:27 +0000 UTC]

Hrm... I actually do not know! I've heard that bottom weight doesn't take to the dye very well, for darker colors (my friend tried to ombre dye some for her final, and it came out lighter than she wanted, but that was using a fiber reactive dye, not RIT). You may either need to dye it a couple of times to get it dark enough, but I do know that it's possible to get the color onto the fabric

Your best bet is to do a small sample of it (just scale down the proportions of water and dye) and see what color it comes out. Before dumping all of your fabric into it, though, let the dyed sample dry overnight, and then rise it out to get all of the dye out of it That should tell you if you're going to need to do it more that once!

You may also want to experiment with using a darker blue in conjunction with the aquamarine dye, but that is definitely something to do samples with before dying any quantity of fabric

Hooray! I hope it works out for you! If RIT gives you a pain, I believe a company called "Dylon" has a dye that is meant for nylon and poly stuffs, but I've never got to use it... if RIT doesn't work, let me know and I'll see if there are any other dyes I've used that would work for you, too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to lupe12142 [2009-08-01 15:43:13 +0000 UTC]

It will probably turn out lighter, just because it's so dodgy to know what color polyester will take - it's like a random game! You may want to start out with just doing more thinned out batches, and just keep re-dying it until you get the color you want - that way, you're (hopefully) not going to overshoot it on the first dying!

Would you recommend RIT dye to color jeans? My sister and I bought some black jeans that faded after we washed them. From there we bought some DYLON fabric dye (in Velvet black, its a powder). After we dyed the jeans, they looked ok. But they still fade every time we wash them.

Any tips?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to AznAnimeChick [2009-06-20 00:16:26 +0000 UTC]

ooh... you're probably never going to get a deep black with denim, it's just something about the type of fiber and it's ability to take colors, I'm sorry to say. If the DYLON stuff didn't work, RIT probably won't, either

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AznAnimeChick In reply to taeliac [2009-06-20 01:05:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks a lot! But would the RIT fade after washing? Cause it's not that the dye wasn't dark, its that it faded after we washed the jeans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to AznAnimeChick [2009-06-20 06:24:36 +0000 UTC]

If the other dye didn't stick, the RIT probably won't, either - that's the big downside of really dark colors, they don't like to stick to anything unless it's professionally done (like, in the large factory when the fabric is woven~) and if they can't get it to stick, it probably won't XP

Is there any stretch to the pants? Because dying things with a bit of spandex or lycra in them is nigh impossible, or at least getting the dye to stick

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AznAnimeChick In reply to taeliac [2009-06-20 18:16:30 +0000 UTC]

o.0 I see.. well I guess we're gonna just have to dye em once again and leave em be. We don't wear the jeans often, but it'll still be nice to have em nice and dark. Thanks for the info.

As for he stretch, I'm not quite sure so I'll look into it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to AznAnimeChick [2009-06-23 16:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Probably, I'm sorry to say! At least they won't get regular wear - you could try washing them by hand in cold water, if you do have to clean them. Just use a little bit of detergent (something like Woolite is great) in cold water, and let them hang dry, and the color may stay better!

You're so awesome for posting this color chart! I had a feeling that RIT dye would come out muted, for some reason. Is there another dye that you would recommend that will work better if we want brighter colors? Thank you in advance!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to waselreins [2009-03-18 18:03:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, RIT is really kind of not the best dyes out there. For the brighter colors, it more or less depends on what your material is - cottons will always tend to dye a bit more muted, but silks dye wonderfully. I'm sorry to say, though, that all the dying I've done has been with various chemical dyes, not mixes you purchase in the store [link] is where I usually get all of my dyes and supplies.

I have heard that Dylon dyes work on polyester fabrics, but I've never actually done that before.

This is the dye [link] that I've seen used in theatre productions before, but I haven't actually done the dying. If you're going to do this route, though, be sure you get all the auxiliaries you'll need

taeliac In reply to waselreins [2009-03-27 14:51:34 +0000 UTC]

Any time! It's a bit tricky at first, to get used to having to mix these things yourself and get the proportions right to dye the color you want, if you're doing it the complicated way, but once you do, it's actually rather addicting

This is really neat. It's wonderful you put so much effort into this. : ' )

BTW, where would be the best place to get RIT Dye? Just a common store like Walmart?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Lekitzul [2009-03-19 03:24:51 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem!! I had to do the samples for class, so it was definitely worth it posting them, because those stupid dying strips are really expensive to just up and buy, and not to mention all the different colors of dye

And, yep! You should be able to find it at Walmart by their crafts, and places like JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby. I even think some Walgreens and other pharmacy places have them, by the laundry detergent

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lekitzul In reply to taeliac [2009-03-20 00:21:43 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, I know how that is. We have to pay 1-2 times a year for some classes. And extra if we want to further ourselves. XD

Thanks for telling me. If I can weasel my mom or grandmother out of a pot I'll try this on some a cotton/polyster blend. I'm gonna have to figure out how to do it in bands though. XD
