Description

Weeks had gone by and Lani had found it fairly easy to keep the egg a secret from Alma. She kept it wrapped tightly in her scarf and surrounded by pillows, so the few times that Alma had stepped into her room, the egg was out of sight thankfully. However, if it wasn’t the egg itself giving her secret away, Lani was fairly certain it would be herself. Every day she found her mind wandering back to the simple orange design, her heart aching while she desperately tried to come up with another excuse to leave whatever she was doing to go back and hold it. Her own egg.
“Lani, dear, are you alright?” Alma asked, pulling Lani out of her thoughts and back to the task at hand. Alma stood in front of her, her arms outstretched and an egg in her paws, though not nearly as pretty as the one she had tucked away, Lani thought.
“Oh! Im sorry Alma what did you say?”
“I asked if you could wipe this one clean for me. Whats going on dear, you’re not usually one to be up in the clouds all the time.”
Lani reached for the egg but Alma pulled it gently away. Not enough to be considered angry, but enough to be obvious that this wasn’t a rhetorical question.
“Im just sleepy I guess.” Lani said, scratching the back of her neck, “I don’t get much sleep these days..”
“Hmm.” Alma muttered, squinting at the blue gro who seemed to shrink under her gaze. “I see..”
“But its nothing!” Lani said quickly, reaching out for the egg once more, “I’ll take more care to make sure I don’t zone out again!”
Alma smiled, not unkindly, and gestured for Lani to sit with her in a few chairs nearby while she placed the egg she was holding back in its nest.
Lani swallowed harshly and followed her, sitting awkwardly in her chair and avoiding eye contact. Did Alma know? Was it obvious that she was hiding something? Or worse yet, would she have to give up the egg? Lani’s stomach churned at the thought of giving up her egg. Afterall, she had wanted one for as long as she could remember, and to be denied the right to be a mother-
“Lani, I know you have something that you want to tell me. I wasn’t going to say anything since you are an adult and you can make your own decisions, but I think its clear you have a little bit of guilt for not speaking up. I will wait for you to speak, but I do hope that you can confide in me.”
Lani looked up in shock, though not so much surprised at the fact that Alma knew. Alma knew everything you did, regardless of whether she was there or not; Though how is still a mystery.
“Alma I.. I was given an egg by a young mother who came from the woods. I didn’t get the chance to ask her any questions, but it had been clear that she had only just laid the egg, so I hurried back to the Nook. I was so scared the egg would be harmed because it wasn’t very warm, that I ran straight to my room to keep it warm. I was so afraid that you would take it from me... or that maybe I really am not fit to be a mother..” Lani sighed, rubbing her eyes with her paws. “I don’t know... I don’t know why I thought the way I did. But Alma please don’t make me give this egg up. I know I haven’t moved out yet, and there are probably parents who are more fit to take care of it than I am, but- its been my dream to be a mother for forever and-”
“Lani, im not going to take your egg from you” Alma interrupted. Lani looked up to see her smiling down at her, and her spirits lifted a little.
“Y-you aren’t?”
“No. In fact, I think this could be good for you. I know how much this means to you, and I’ve watched you grow up. You’ve stayed awake countless nights with me and the newborns and still gotten up the next day to help with the older wynglings. I have no doubt that you will be a great mother to this egg. “
Lani couldn’t help but cry and thank Alma over and over again until she was finally sent away to go retrieve her egg.

//A few weeks later//

The first crack was quiet, but nonetheless had startled Lani awake. She groggily looked down at the egg beside her when it cracked a second time. Now she was awake. She watched in awe as her little orange baby made its way out of its egg and its first cries we're heard. With shaky paws, she reached over and lifted it up slightly, and smiled. A little boy.
Lani wrapped him in her scarf, the same one she had wrapped around him the first time she held his egg, and pulled him into her arms to clean him off. She let the scarf drop to the bed again and cradled the wyngling so she could get a good look at his features. His little shell, his spiked ears, his round tail. He was perfect.
“Atticus... Thats your name..”

THE BABY IS BORNDED!!!
Ahh i'm so excited to start drawing these two hhhhh
Also, after deciding what ears I wanted to give him, I realized that most of my Gro's look like animals
Atticus looks like a little Dinosaur Turtle
Cory is a water dog
Orion is a bat
