Back Story: Mantis was raised by his Mother in the South Blue along with his two sisters. His Father abandoned them at an early age to explore the Grand Line with a band of Pirates. Mantis felt betrayed and blamed his father's leaving on pirates, and hated them deeply, he revered the marines and tried to sneak onto various ships when he was young.

When he was around the age of 12, his mother's health was in decline and his sisters and himself had to fend for themselves and take care of their mother, while their mother was having a relatively good health day, the Marines burst through the door demanding she come with them. She asked why and they replied that she had been condemned to death for the witholding of vital government information. She told the children to escape, and tried to fend off the Marines, but in the struggle she lost her life. Mantis was so confused and conflicted about the Marine's actions and fled with his 2 sisters into the woods. In the woods, they were found by the Marines and his youngest sister was killed before his eyes. In a rage, he brutally murdered 5 marines with one hit each.

He fled with his sister Manta, and formed the Smasher Pirates with her in order to find the truth behind the Marine's actions and find their father.

Fun facts:
Mantis cannot stand apples. They make him feel incredibly sick.
