Description
Went to the swamp today and it is a mess muddy water parts and pieces of trees about. I guess all the storms really took a tole on it. Anyway here is something I ran into and thought I would share. Don't have a clue as to type.Related content

I'm going with a water moccasin as well... The cottonmouth or water moccasin is a less deadly snake that has earned
a reputation as being aggressive. These snakes will bite if provoked, but are more likely to flee than bite. Their venom
is haemotoxic and their bites cause gangrene. Bad tempers...stay away if possible... b.

I stay as far away as possible. besides this one I have some shots of other snakes farther out in the water you can see heads and some body but have to work on the shots for awhile to make it worth posting.

Whereabouts (roughly) did you take the picture? Off the top of my head I'd say you have a water moccasin.

There is a swamp I visit often. But due to the recent storms it is muddy water and this one was on a broken limb in the water. I thought water moccasins were black and nick named cotton mouths. But I don't know snakes at all other than to leave them be! lol

Water moccasins are indeed known as cottonmouths, and yes they are commonly black (I've been closer to such snakes than I would consider comfortable), but variations in color can be encountered.

I appreciate the information and thanks for taking the time to help with an ID. As you say variations in color may account for my misunderstanding and it seems others agree with you so water moccasin it is.!
