Description
Went to the swamp today and it is a mess muddy water parts and pieces of trees about. I guess all the storms really took a tole on it. Anyway here is something I ran into and thought I would share. Don't have a clue as to type.Related content

It's fucken big. It look like it has just had a feed. (or it is fat) I hate it when you can't identify a snake. You have no worries in Australia mate. Here they all kill you.

Probably Nerodia fasciata the banded water snake. They're not venomous, but water snake species share habitat with the cottonmouth and copperhead throughout their range so may have actually developed a form of mimicry.
By the time a cottonmouth is full-grown its pattern usually fades away and it will appear uniformly black or gray from a distance. A copperhead's pattern doesn't fade, is brighter than this, and usually includes wider bands of a "Hershey kiss" shape. Unfortunately the true giveaway of whether you're looking at Nerodia or Agkistrodon is the eyes, and I can see why people don't want to get close enough to check them. Water snake eyes look froggy: they're big and round.

It has a much brighter copper color than those shown on the links. I really appreciate your help in IDing this snake. Maybe it is a water snake I certainly don't know. I live in Georgia so maybe I can get the wildlife folks here to ID it.

I could be wrong, but it looks like a Copperhead. They like water too. Have very distinct coppery color which though picture is dark looks to be the case. Cottonmouths tend be a little more gray. However the state and area where the image was taken ins very important in Identification. I would say either an eastern or western copperhead. It could be a northern Cottonmouth, but again location and area are key. Without that knowledge it is all just guessing. Cottonmouth also known as a water mocassin are known by their very distinct pointed face. The shape of their head is very sharp and looks more like a triangle then just a diamond.

It certainly has the coloring of a copperhead. I need to do some searching and hopefully find out just what it is. Thanks so much for the information!!
