Been so dry now wet so they are always in the yard hunting worms!

I notice after it rains here they are out in the yard stomping around looking for worms, and finding them too!Β

The Georgia red clay is harder than rock when dry so they need to wait for rain here

We had that kind of stuff in Oklahoma too in places.Β I always loved how red it was down there.Β You don't get that up here in Nebraska, at least not around where I live.

I was watching a robin in my back yard the other day foraging for insects. It would find a worm, pull it out the ground, rough it up bit toss it a little way and leave it wiggling on the ground. I saw him do this twice. He would hop around searching and do same thing. It did it some other kind of bugs during the process and I thought it might come back and eat the worms but he just flew away! I just thought that was a little weird.

I think it is weird too. I didn't watch to see what the robin did after but I wished I had now to see if it did as yours did.

I noticed a misspelling in my comment, I meant to say it did eat some other bugs. That is what struck me odd about it. I thought maybe it was not really hungry but could not resist attacking the worm, but then I watched it eat other insects before going after a second worm. Odd!

Maybe the worm had been dead for sometime so not what the robin wanted it wanted live insects.

No, they were quite lively, he had to pull them out. Like I said it struck me as a strange behavior, but I had forgot it until I saw your picture. We had been having frequent rains over the last couple days, and the ground was pretty moist, forcing the worms to the surface.and maybe he had his fill but could not resist the instinct to pull them out.
