He is my favourite character too (but mabe I just have soft spot for overpowered cute idiots ) and watching CG like 4th time just for him is too tempting >.< (gawd >.< have I fallen to fangirling level ? )

Mutated DNA or steroids in food you say Well those are also more serious explanations than what we got in anime >.< Honestly. Giving us hints through all first series that he has some uber mysterious connection to geass and then in second one saying "oh forget all those geass thingie, he just happens to be superhuman" =.= I know that author was forced to completely redo and change second season but ... =.= (on the other hand, thanks to this we got Anya and Rolo instead, so maybe it's not tat bad)

I also thought that Suzaku would possess a geass eventually, but as you said, the guionists just were trying to make him cooler XD
Or we could say that he has the soldier Geass: it makes him able to kick asses with style.
