The news of changes in leadership caused concern and fear to ripple throughout the herd, even in the stoic Kalisi. He felt his heart speed up, his mind race. Who would step up in this time of need? Who did he trust to step up? Amber eyes flew around the gathered horses, ears flicking at the murmurs. It wasn’t until he felt a gentle bump on his shoulder did he snap out of his trance. His gaze turned to Zisyn, who he found looking at him with a tilted head. “What?” He muttered simply, brows furrowing.

“You should try it out.” She hummed, a gentle smile on her face.

Kalisi snorted, head shaking. “You’d be far more fit. You should go.” He looked back to the crowd, to the unfamiliar mare that had made the announcement. He couldn’t lie, the thought had crossed his mind— Even when he was younger, he had always wondered what it’d be like. Of course, those dreams were stamped out when his magic manifested. Even now, most Hihiri turned their noses at equines like him.

“Kal. You know I can’t.” Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Zisyn paw at the sand, her ears turned back.

No, he knew. She had already broken one of the main requirements for being Holy One. The stallion gave a quiet sigh, looking back to his friend. Her and her family were closer to him than his own. Even Hodari’s son was practically his nephew, and he hoped Zisyn’s child would be the same. He knew the kind of herd he wished they could grow up in— Free of judgment, safe from harm, sheltered from the possibly dangerous changes going on in the world, guided in a way that he didn’t have as a foal. His lips pressed together as he thought, his tail flicking ever so slightly.

“It can’t hurt to just try, even if you don’t get the position.” The mare cooed, giving him another nudge to pull him from his thoughts. “The herd would be missing out though, truly. I can’t think of anyone better.” She gave him a knowing look, the hint of a grin on her lips, an expression that never failed to spark some sort of irritation in him. There were times he hated how much she could read him.

“If I do, will you stop giving me that look?” He grumbled out, chin tucking into his chest.

“What look? I’m not giving you a look.” He rolled his eyes at her words, a quiet snort leaving him once again. “Go on. Hodi and I will be right here.”

Kalisi took a deep breath, ears pressing against his skull for a moment. He watched as Zisyn padded to her sister, who also seemed lost in thought.

It seemed like ages passed before he finally managed to get his legs to move, head raising to look out over the crowd as he pushed further into the middle of the gathered herd. His eyes moved to Muruch, the strange mare that had set the whole commotion alight. He tried not to think of the attention on him, the many gazes that fell onto his spotted pelt. “I would like to attempt the trials.” He announced, doing his best to keep the quiver out of his voice.

When the mare looked at him, he felt his fins draw closer to his body. “And what makes you believe you are fit for this?”

The question caused him to fall silent, eyes flicking about at the sudden quiet that fell over the equines surrounding them. He sought out Zisyn and Hodari in the sea of faces. They both gave supportive smiles, easing his nerves.

When he brought his gaze back to the blessed mare, his voice was more confident than before. “I know I’m young, but I have my fair share of experience. I helped my friends recover from the Nightmare that plagued our lands, I was there to comfort a grieving family when they thought that they’d lost the very stallion you saved, I’ve made friends in Beryl Bay, I even traveled to the north to help make the Midway between Linx and Saevarg territories.” He began, casting another look around. “I know to some, mingling with outsiders in such a way is something to frown about. But I’ve learned so much from those in other herds. Some of them accepted me more than my own family.”

The stallion frowned, looking back to Muruch. He stayed quiet for a long moment, mulling over how to phrase what he wanted to say next. Soon, it was decided that it'd be best to just... Say it. “I’ve also had the ability to speak with spirits my whole life.” His ears flicked to the murmurs that set off, a glare being shot to the crowd. “And I’ve been judged harshly for that. Even now, I see the spark in some of your eyes. I want to ensure that no foal has to go through what I did. We shouldn’t be throwing those that are different to the sharks. We should be supporting them and lifting them up.

Dismiss me if you want, but this herd needs someone who will unite us. Not continue to turn a blind eye to those that don’t fall into the standards set in place by tribemates who don’t even swim our seas anymore. I want to be the Hihiri guiding us into the future, rather than letting us stay stagnant and stuck in the past.”
