I Think they have teased us enough(Hollywood). I mean, we get the micro EVA suit in District 9, the ExoSquad like Mech suits in Avatar... all single mech fights....
The best Fight with a human controlled mech(live action wise) was at end of Aliens(another James Cameron flick) and that was more or less practical work, and it was STILL only a mech VS Alien fight.

Oh, maybe adding the cockpit shield/cover to cover the very visible cockpit might be a good practical idea, otherwise a bullzeye is all you left out...

you do know that a modern jet alone can almost reach mach 6 speeds. think of the technology for a Valkyrie, If you saw the Macross Zero you'll know that visible cockpit is the least to worry about(crappy co-pilots are LOL). Valkyrie alone is an extremely fast and adaptable mech, the only thing missing is the power, but the extremely high speed and adaptability makes up for it.

I meant in Battloid mode, they always had a cover extend to protect that area. Also, this cover used for reentry I believe too...
I see that in your design, including such a retractable shield would not be feasible. Variable window tinting(the windscreen going opaque) could work instead.
But, from the original show, you didn't stay in the cockpit of the jet in Battloid mode, you were in chest of the unit(upright sitting). The fighter cockpit became the hip/lower torso area.
Your design seems much smaller having the cockpit BE The chest, though seating position would be quite unconformable(you'd be hanging off your flight harness) if not useless. A 90 degree tilt back so they're upright and can at least use the windscreen as a backup if the sensors fail. Your chosen seating arrangement would work in space, but not in gravity.

also i forgot to mention that the valkyrie i drew is a younger model. if you've seen macross plus, you'll see that the characters in the anime are trying to develope a new type of control system, involving a manual type(a bit more improved but still old YF19) VS a mind controlled high budget model(YF21). Anyways yeah, and dont worry i plan on making more macross pictures in the future, I plan on doing so because macross is my favorite robot series next to gundam wing(heero is such a badass character....ill never forget the ripped invitation LOL)
