I wish I could meet a spotted skunk! For now I'll have to deal with their striped cousins. (:
Good shot!

Thanks. We had a minor plague of these little guys a couple of years ago. I ended up trapping about 20 of them over a period of a few months and hauling them off to the hills. We've only see Mephitis around here lately.

That's a lot of skunks. I've only ever seen a wild one once, about a month and a half ago. (And I live in the woods...fail.)

But I see domestic skunks every day.

I hear that spotted skunks are 'more annoying' than striped skunks. They climb and are a lot smaller and can get into smaller holes, and are a lot faster. Striped skunks can be mighty fast when they need to be, I can't imagine how fast a spotted is! I'd love to see one in person (:

It's all true. One of them got into our house by squeezing through the space between the moving and fixed parts of a sliding glass door (the sliding glass door was open with the screen closed--oh, and it's on a second-story terrace). However, they're definitely cuter, they seem less trigger-happy than the striped skunks, and they also seemed to actually enjoy playing with our cats. The cats weren't so sure about it...

I don't know much about them being 'trigger happy'. Striped skunks have warning signs and actually don't like to spray and can live very peacefully with humans if they were better educated. There were two skunks that lived in a lady's closet and she had no idea until one day she saw them walking around her house. I think that's hilarious. What I don't think is funny is when I take my domestics out for a walk or to the pet store, a bunch of people seem to think it's okay to scold them because their garden is dug up. If they understood they were digging for harmful grubs that would destroy the WHOLE garden, they wouldn't mind sacrificing that one or two plants. They seem to think skunks do it to spite them. I could go on a rampage about how humans blame skunks for so much but really, they don't know what they're talking about. I'll end it here though, lol. I'd love to see a spotted running around my house.

Well, perhaps "trigger happy" wasn't the most precise descriptor; but the striped skunks who visit our house often announce their arrival with a preemptive spray; and the spotted skunks seemed quite reluctant to spray until the door of the Havahart trap sprang shut.

So you have domestic striped skunks? It occurred to me more than once that I should inquire about getting one of the spotted skunks de-scented. They acted as if they were already full-fledged members of the family. I've read they're not as suitable for pet-dom as the striped skunks, though.

I know someone who has one. She said they climb and run around and are hectic and hard to keep as pets if you're not prepared for them. And they're small and can get into everything. I can't find any breeders who have them, and I would not be able to bring them in my state anyway, as importing them from another state is illegal. I'm happy with the striped skunks and I love them dearly. If you get one as a pet, just check in with the laws. The laws are just so lame. Some states you can have any color striped, except black and white. Other states are only black and white. My state hates skunks even if they're legal pets and will do what they can to make it seem like they're illegal when you have them so they can kill them. We had a fight with the officials to keep our three (we have four now) because a stupid clerk at a pet store picked one up without permission or warning and she bit him. He wasn't angry and was really sorry, and it barley bled. Just a drop. The night manager reported us and lied out her butt. Blahblahblah, long story short, thank GOODNESS we got a good officer on our case and he didn't want to take them. If he took one of our skunks, he'd have taken them all, killed them to test for rabies, only to find out they were perfectly healthy. Ugh. That manager got fired because we called corporate of the store and asked them to drop the case and explained things. They were PISSED that one of their workers did that. If they didn't drop it, I don't thinkw e'd have our babies anymore. ):

Sorry for the rage post D:
(Most states aren't that bad though. Our state is kinda famous in the skunk-world as being a giant douche.)
