Mendertale Part I, page 044
Remember the scene in Undertale in which we cook with Undyne and what she says about Papyrus. She had a good reason not to send him onto a battle field. Because let's face it: when monsters are turned to dust in battle it's a completely different thing than seeing a human die and in what way.
I think that Undyne have been secretly really glad about the fact that the war was over and the numbers of humans falling so limited. She called Papyrus 'innocent' and that means something...
About what actually happened... I think you can tell by now and I've tried to depict it as subtle, yet clear as I could without making too disturbing. Btw... Apart from the obvious, both brothers are also 'seeing' something else.
What it is, you will know in time, but it will be very important later on...
To me it will be back to work next week, so the next update will take little.
But more will come soon, for sure!

a cliffhanger it is indeed. Soon though, this chapter will come to an end.
(pun not intended)

'when monsters are turned to dust in battle it's a completely different thing than seeing a human die and in what way'
Actually I go into this in my story . . . the way monsters and humans react is a cultural thing.
'I think that Undyne have been secretly really glad about the fact that the war was over and the numbers of humans falling so limited.'
Idk she seemed pretty gung ho about killing humans. In all likelyhood she's taken care of one of the previous souls. She certainly doesn't JUDGE Papyrus, but she knows he'd be ineffective, too. She IS a military leader.

Well, I agree with the first part.
As for the second: This may wasn't my best choice of words here, sorry if it wasn't clear. I actually meant this in the context of Papyrus.
Undyne wouldn't mind a fight, of course. She's a capable warrior and knows the drill and how to deliver the drill to those in training. But she also cares a lot about Paps and I think she wouldn't feel at ease, even in battle and with her duties on her shoulders, to know that her friend might get killed, because Papyrus is not able to bring himself to actually kill a human. (He's the only opponent that NEVER kills you in the game, afterall.)
That's actually what I meant, when I said: Undyne might be really glad that there is no actuall war. She knows what a war means, in all ways of the dreadful thing that is is... and what it would mean in context of Papyrus.
Did I make sense...?

It might even be that she specifically is (platonically) very attached to Papyrus. If she did take him under her wing, I have no doubt that she could eventually coax him into understanding what battle really means. BUT, she likes him too much for that, and yeah, even if he bended some, he'd probably never be as able to precisely fit in that mold as the next monster.
Given all the neutral endings where she wages war against humans (or even just stages an uprising against Toriel) I really think you're viewing her through rose-colored glasses. I don't tend to view the Neutral endings as totally a cause of the player/Frisk's actions, but reflective of the character's personalities, too. And THEN there's Mettaton . . . *shudder*

Good points here, but if you think I 'view her through rose-colored glasses' I must say, this not really true.
Personally I consider the True Pacifist Run the actual ending, which my AU is based on. So I consider the behaviour of the characters of this run as the base of what need to assume 'canon' in context in Mendertale.
But that is the point: in my AU and the story.
I'm not saying that you're wrong about Undyne, rather the opposite. You are right about her. Undyne would act and react in the way you've descript it. But it always depends on the kind of run that will cause her to react in a certain matter. It's the conditions on the events that causes somebody to react the way they do.
So of course she whould still want to declare war on mankind if you have a Neutral Run (or worse) since her view about humans wouldn't be changed.
But I also understand you're point of view and thank you for sharing your opinion about Undyne.

Thank you
Well, it will take a tiny bit, but it will be revealed. You can interpretate it though if you consider what Papyrus said about the HP...

Yeah, the amount of comics I've seen where the bro's freak out from seeing an x-ray of Frisk's arm or something really helped me pick that up
If Sans has to involve Pap in it, you can guarantee that it is no laughing matter
I love the comic by the way

The way that I interpretted that scene, I thought she was concerned Papyrus would be unwilling to kill a foe, and would therefore be killed himself.
Not to say that injuries wouldn't be terrible to witness, potentially mentally scarring, that's also very much true.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Taleea In reply to LKWayvern [2019-01-13 19:49:58 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. And I agree with you, but I also think she meant both aspects. Some soldiers, even though they survive the battle often suffer from the traumata they have due to what they saw.
Since Papyrus never kills you in the game, I have assumed that he also never really saw any sort of heavy injuries... at least not on a human.

LKWayvern In reply to Taleea [2019-01-13 19:55:39 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, PTSD and the like.
Papyrus is the only monster who NEVER kills you. I assumed he'd have to practice to get that sort of control. Not saying that practice would definitely result in TERRIBLE injuries, but even Toriel and Asgore can't stop their magic mid-attack like he does when you fall to 1 HP, and they've both been around waaaaaaay longer than he.
Not certain how often injuries like that are common in the Underground, though... Like, obviously there are monsters who have Fallen Down, and the Amalgamates. Those must be like seeing dead or near dead monsters, and zombies, respectively. And there's also Undyne's eyepatch-- though it's never mentioned how that happened. (I've even seen some headcanons where Undyne's eye is perfectly fine, she just wears the eyepatch to look badass.)

Taleea In reply to LKWayvern [2019-01-16 20:11:38 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it's really something special about Papyrus. He really wants to do no harm to anybody.
Stopping them, yes. Injuring them, well if it can't be helped.
But he would never kill you in the game...
He's not stupid. A bit eccentric and maybe a bit naive, yes... but when it comes to act of killing he's still quite innocent.
Undyne have fought and certainly killed enough to know how to handle the emotions and after effects, but with Paps it's a different thing.
