Whew... what a week. Actually I wanted to do more, but I just couldn't find the time for it. I'm just glad I was able to finish this pic... and I must say I really like how it turned out.Haven't been doing a work with Signas in a while and so I'm happy I finally got an idea.
Enjoy. ^^

I know, it's strange. Possibly it has something to do with the fact that there isn't much info about him in the first place. If he would have been more present in the games, people would have done more art of him for sure.

I guess so, but I'm almost drawn to background characters BECAUSE we don't have much info about them. We can get cues from the other characters and then hypothesize what those characters are like, and in some ways, make them our own.
Signas could be a no nonsense, by-the-book, my-way-or-the-highway kind of general. Or he could be, the way I commonly envision him, is a Father to his troops and kind of a goof ball when nothing serious is going on.

well, since I'm still working on that game that will include him as a main-character, I did an analysation of his personality and then some (10 pages of writing ).
I concluded he's somebody who has a lot of selfcontrol for the heavy tasks and great responsibilities laid upon his shoulders. He had been formely a private investigator and have been involved in similar situations as he is now, only minus the "being-the-boss-of-all"-part. He had been selected by the city's concil out of the simple fact of NEED after the events of X4, because the current commander at the time (not Dr. Cain, btw.) had messed up, but big time. You can say Signas had been "thrown in the deep end of the pool" with his selection.
You're absolutely right about one thing: He seems to be rather cold at times, but he has a deep emotional caring for those under his command and friends (Example: X5, at the point when the mission to destroy the Eurasia has failed and Alia says that X and Zero are missing, the hunters Β are about to evacuate, yet Signas hesitates for a moment).
Yet, despite his cool demanor, he had deep emotional needs, such as he would like to let loose for a while, taking a rest from all this.Β Of course, he, as the top-head of the Maverick Hunters, is so bond into his duties, it seems to be impossible for him to relax from all the stress and paper-work.Β
He rarely smiles, but not because he can't, just because he got trouble of letting such emotions too close to him.Β
I don't think he's afraidΒ of letting them closeΒ or is too inexperienced, but he is in the fix of a situation with too much to pay attention to. So he must be uncertain about how much he can allow himself to relax. This also comes from the fact, that Signas had to make up for the mess his precessor made with the Repliforce-incidense in X4.Β
He is indeed a by-the-book-commander, but thanks to the mistakes done with the X4-events, he also had to in order to show the world, that he was the right choice to lead the Hunters (you can be sure, the that the world and the politicians would have eyed the "new commander", so the Hunters wouldn't make a mess again).
There is a hint that he's has a cigarette-addiction to get rid of stress, but I think that was rather made up by fans. Yet, it's just an example that would indeed be fitting.
Another thing: There are some other hints in some manga he has a direct conection to Dr. Cain somehow, possibly being one of the last reploids directly created by the doc himself (that is, if you're not following the plot-hole of the OVA in Maverick Hunter X, in which Dr. Cain died, making his appearance in X2 actually quiet impossible).
If you like we could discuss about him a bit more intensly, though my time on the internet still is rather limited, but I would like to share what I know about the X-verse and the impressions I've got over the years.

Sounds cool, I'm not on a lot though, being in college and all.
In the manga, I think it is, it is stated that Signas is Doctor Cain's last creation. So that would make Signas and Sigma brothers. And I'm SURE that would weigh on his mind. Especially if a lot of people know.
I do have a head cannon, don't know where I got it, but I have this head cannon of where he and Colonel have a competitive brother-like relationship and General's their father-figure who's the Proud-No-Matter-What-You-Do kind of father. Along with that I see Sigma being an overprotective big-brother type, which makes things awkward and hilarious some times.

Well, that's true, but on the other hand if you really think about this, Signas would be "related" to most of the Reploids created by Dr. Cain and his Cain Labs, and that are some, alright.
Plus, I think I couldn't really consider them brothers in the typical sense, because they don't share the same "mold" and design-aspects, which also has nothing to do with the fact that Sigma had been created much earlier then Signas.Β
If you look at the way their bodies have been concepted you're not really seeing many simularities between them. Both of them have been created with complete different intentions. Sigma was meant for active duty on the battlefield, Signas rather is the organising and leading tactical strategist that remains in the HQ and also needs to deal with political matters like answering the city's council.Β
If you're looking for a more obvious link, Colonel would be a more fitting choice for that, in fact. And as for General, well... I think you always admire your superior and see a father-figure in him. On the other hand, General was responsible for the safety and well-being of his army, so it's only natural you develope such an impression when you serve under a commander like him. That and his charisma did quiet the job.
I think it would be more along the lines that Signas and Sigma would both consider Dr. Cain their "father", but I don't think that Signas nor Sigma would look each other as "brothers", not matter if based on true, even small, facts or not. And as for Signas... I don't think he would really care about this. Of course he has his thoughts about Sigma and it would have been a different thing, if he would have Β grown up with him, but under the given circumstances, I really doubt he would make this a personal matter.Β
Signas has a the great tendency to appeare a little bit "steril" at time, because he has himself so well under emotional control, but deep down he's also suffering because of that. Yet that emotional control let him also do his job so well, but it also let him appear really lonely sometimes.
Like I said: I did a lot of thinking about him and analized his emotional world. He quiet grew on me, I must say.

Oh I can imagine, I think Signas is one of the most emotionally deep background characters of the MegaMan X world.

Well, at least he's the character with the emotional background, which is the hardest to see through. Of course, this is also why him emotions have to many fascettes.Β

Hey there (finally online for a very short time again Won't change any time soon, though )
Well, I did a lot of characters from the entire Rockman-verses before, but as for the X-saga I did such researches on Signas, X and Zero, Sigma, Dr. Cain, Colonel, Iris, Gate, Aila and some charas from Command Mission and some of the Maverick (bosses). But with Signas I did the most complex one, so far.
I don't do these researches in general, but only when I need the information for my projects, that's why I don't have all charas covered so far. Yet, I could do one for them all, if I have to, of course.

Good to hear from you, I understand what it's like to not have a lot of time on your hands.
That's really cool. That you've researched the characters so well. What projects do you use them for, may I ask? Have I already asked that? I don't remember.
