I still remember the day my mother finally gave into the sickness. Father had already left us during mother's pregnancy, though she never told us why, and Dusk had become more and more reclusive with every passing day mother was sick. I never knew my mother as a healthy wolf, because she became sick with my birth. I wasn't sure why... she never spoke, never moved except to eat and drink. Dusk took care of feeding her, and in turn, me through mother's milk.
I wasn't weaned when she died. My sister couldn't nurse me, and even if she could, I became a burden to her in mom's passing. She wouldn't tell me why for years to come, but in those days, I didn't much care; it was all I ever knew.
Dusk and I were left to take care of ourselves and each-other. Life on the Western Shoreline became more of a hell than the paradise it was for others who lived there. Sure, we lacked predators and new comers, but we were alone and isolated from any other wolves. Just the two of us, wandering every day in our own little piece of hell.

I still miss my sister, even if she did hate me in those first years of my life. I don't blame her, nor will I ever...

...after all, it was my fault our mother died.
