Darth Vader was always a symbol of power and terror. His mask was designed to inspire fear and intimidation throughout the galaxy. Vader was the Black knight to the Evil Empire, the right hand to the Emperor.In the Original “The Star Wars” as it was in 1977 - Lord Vader was described as:
(LORD) DARTH VADER “First Knight of the Sith”. A seven foot tall Black Knight of the Sith, Vader is “right hand” to the Master of the Sith, Espaa Valorum. His sinister face is partially obscured by his flowing black robes and grotesque breath mask, which are in sharp contrast to the fascist white armored suits of the Imperial stormtroopers. Lord Vader speaks in an oddly filtered voice through his complex breathing mask. He is unspeakably evil and terrifying. He is sadistic and brutal, and tends to laugh horribly. Although he is a strong leader among the Sith, he is feared by Imperial troops, and he dislikes the Imperials he has to work with. In the Battle of Yavin, Vader’s ship crashed into Han Solo’s starship. Whether Vader survived is unclear.
So when I set out to redesign Vader for this project it was a challenge because I wanted someone who was both imposing and agile. In Star Wars Darth Vader is Luke’s Father, an aged relic of a lost age. While he was feared, he was not challenged as a warrior. He was truly alone in the universe. However, In the “The Star Wars” Lord Vader is not anyone's Father. He is not to receive pity or love from the audience. He is meant to be feared.
He is a deadly assassin for the Sith and acts as the tip of the spear for the Empire’s agenda.
So this Vader needed to be equipped for The Wilderness that is the Star Wars Galaxy. He needed to be aggressive, dangerous and most of all he needed to be agile.

Lucas' notes are unclear. Vader only became a cyborg when the Anakin and Kane character as well as the Vader character combined into the Darth we know today.
So its a mystery Lucas won't share. What about you, what do you think?

Cool redesign. I like the "agile" additions. He looks more like a warrior and less like the statesman he appeared to be in the OT. However, the colorful palette doesn't strike me as being as imposing as the original all-black. It's not bad, just not my preference. Nice work nonetheless.

I really appreciate the feedback.[link] It's true the color was a risk, but I felt in this universe (read the 1977 first draft which is Awesome by the way: Almost a movie: [link] ) its more utilitarian and 1940's. It seems to connect to WWII in the way that Lord of the Rings connects to WWI. Also in the original ’77 draft Lord Vader is more connected to the Empire. In the Main Star wars universe he's a fringe Sith Lord with ties to the Emperor not necessarily the Empire. So I was going for way to tie into this Universe’s Empire Color scheme. I played around with more blue hues but it definitely softened him up. So I felt the crimson was imposing and tied him to the Empire.

Thank you, Deadly and fearsome was a driving force here. The Original Vader is imposing and Dredful, I feel they achieved that look with him, but I wanted a look made this Vader appear dangerous, fast and aggresive.

Yes! The old Jedi thing was exactly what I wanted. In the original 1977 draft Vader is one of if not the first Jedi other than the Starkiller Family

But then there's the whole... where did the Jedi come from thing. Right? Other than him and the Starkiller thing (real name... look it up on Wikipedia if you don't know. I know his first name, but I'd get the spelling wrong of the surname if I type it now). And of course, where it will go on from that point (Darth Vader), too. I like the timelines out of the original films.
