Hum, I wish I had more energy and motivation to do a proper version of this but... meh. I don't.I mentioned that I came up with a theory of how sableye's grow up and its appearance depends on its diet. Let's see.
1. When sableye is born, it's completely "naked" of gems. It's also completely dependent on its parents' or trainer's care since it can't open its eyes. This is because the protective diamond layer hasen't developed yet.
2. It's important that sableye eats lots of rocks so it receives important minerals. Rocks are the most common diet but some trainers like to feed their sableyes gems (if they are wealthy enough) so they can control the color of diamond eyes.
3. When sableye is one week old, it will open its eyes and if it has eaten enough rocks, it has diamonds protecting its sensitive eyes. Sableye's pupils can be seen behind the diamond layer (yes, I believe sableyes have normal eyes behind their diamond eyes). Light blue (light yellow with shinies) is the most common color and is received with normal rock diet.
4. Sabley continues to eat rocks...
5. ...And after 2-3 weeks, all the back jewels should have grown. Amount and size is different for each sableye. Sapphires and rubies (emeralds and topazes with shinies) are the most common with normal rock diet but the type of gems can be controlled with the diet.
6.The last gem sableye will grow is its chest gem. With rock diet, the gem will be a ruby (emerald with shiny) but this can also be altered with diet. Danny, for example, somehow got his hands on an emerald and grew a green emerald gem on his chest.
There you go! Something that my nerdy mind came up with. I'm not saying this is a real theory but this is how I'll explain why Danny has an emerald chest gem. If other people want to use this theory in their stories, feel free.

And the pokedex says that Sableye eats gems, and eventually it started growing gems on itself and it's eyes turned to diamonds because of it. I think your theory is pretty solid, but if it ate rocks wouldn't it just not grow any gems? (Or, possibly grow rocks?) But I do like how your Sableye has his eyes shut until he grows his diamond eyes, nice touch

My own theory was that Sableye is actually blind and can't see with its diamond eyes, and relies on echolocation... because it lives in caves as far as I know and things that live in caves are typically blind.
But yes, this is a good theory too. Perhaps if you feed a sableye different types of rocks, then you can change its gem colors that way? I mean, most gems are just heated and pressurized versions of rocks (ex: all rubies where once rocks known as carborundum).

Yes, I agree with the rock type part. I have a sableye character and his chest gem is an emerald because he ate a giant emerald when he was still growing his chest gem. (which is mentioned in the description too actually. XD)

I think its really interesting how you explained sableye. I've always wondered why sableye had diamonds for eyes and if they could actually see with them.
Btw, I have two sableyes. The first one is named Theif (to me sableye looks kinda like a robber because of all the gems and his creepy look)
And the other one is a shiny sableye named Diamond (named after her eyes)

This is not official. Just a theory I came up. But it is true that they got gems on their back by eating rocks.

And by the way for things like this this style is perfect, it looks like pictures sketched on sight when the observer saw the sableye grow and then colored. Now it looks like pictures taken from a nerds notes, which is sort of true I guess...

Hey! I just thought of somthing. What do you suppose would happen to a Sableye that ate the rocks from Chargestone cave? Would the gems give of an electric charge?

I have another theory about the gems on Sablyes backs. Suppose they act as a reservoir of nutriants, like fat deposits on other creatures. If a Saybley were to go without food for a few days it's body would begin to literaly soak up the jewels on it's back giving the Sableye a little more time to find food before it starved to death (this would probably only sustain it for a few days) I assume that most Sableye would easily be able to find food before this happens just by diging but you never know, they could get lost in a desert somwhere.
